ABSTRACT MINIMUM LETHAL TEMPERATURE FOR SEEDLINGS OF THE OIL SEED PLANTThe objective of this paper was to determine the minimum lethal temperature for the oil seed plant Jatropha curcas L., aiming at supporting the expansion of this crop in southern Brazil as an alternative for biofuel production. The experiment was carried out at the Agronomic Institute of Paraná (IAPAR), in Londrina-PR (23º23' S, 50º11' W). In a cold chamber environment, young plants were submitted to treatments with minimum temperatures of +1 ºC, 0 ºC, -1 ºC, -2 ºC, -3 ºC, -4 ºC and -5 ºC, and compared to a control exposed to ambient temperature. Ten plants in each test (replications) were distributed within the chamber in a completely randomized design. The following parameters were evaluated: photosynthetic rate after 6 hours and 7 and 14 days; visual foliar damages one day and one month after the tests; plant mortality one month after the tests and plant recovering in the field. The minimum lethal temperature for Jatropha curcas is between -3 ºC and -4 ºC.
An alternative to keep coffee production in the state of Paraná will be the introduction of robusta coffee, original from Africa, adapted to areas with annual mean temperatures between 22 and 26 o C. We used the historical weather database from IAPAR (Agronomic Institute of Paraná) and considered as apt for cropping the areas within the following conditions: risk of annual frost lower than 25% of probability, annual mean temperature between 22 and 26 °C, and annual water deficiency below 150 mm. The spatial analyzes were based on the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and crossed into the environment of a Geographic Information System (GIS), generating maps of the agroclimatic zoning of Coffea canephora for the current climate and scenarios of climate change with
The cuttings were prepared in two ways (with or without basal lesions) and submitted to four concentrations of IBA (0 mg L -, ,000 mg L -, ,000 mg L -and 3,000 mg L -). After the lesions were made, the cuttings were placed to root in plastic boxes containing carbonized rice husk. The experiment was randomized with five replicates in 2 x 4 factorial arrangement, where each plot was composed by 0 cuttings. After 85 days, the following variables were evaluated: foliar retention (%); rooted cuttings (%); cutting survival rate (%); cuttings with callus but without roots (%); root number per cutting; root length per cutting and wet and dry root matter per cutting (g). There is no significant
Proline production by transgenic plants of Swingle citrumelo and susceptibility to glufosinate ammoniumAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the susceptibility to glufosinate ammonium of transgenic plants of Swingle citrumelo with high proline production. The mutant gene of the enzyme ∆ 1 -pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetase (P5CS), the rate-limiting enzyme in proline biosynthesis, was inserted into Swingle citrumelo plants. The expression of the gene p5cs caused up to 5-fold increase on the proline content in leaf tissues of transgenic plants treated with 200 µM glufosinate ammonium, when compared with control plants. Leaves of transgenic plants accumulated higher amounts of NH 4 + than the nontransgenic control. The herbicide toxicity was evaluated using leaf disks cultivated in MS medium, containing different concentrations of glufosinate ammonium. The severity of the chlorosis, observed in leaf disks of transgenic plants, confirmed the higher susceptibility of Swingle citrumelo plants, with high proline production, to this herbicide.
