Objective: to identify the use of hepatitis B vaccine and risk practices among female sex workers. Methods: cross-sectional research using the Respondent Driven Sampling methodology. One-hundred and fifty-three sex workers were studied. Results: risk practices were related to the early onset of sexual activity, multiple partners with up to 17 clients per week 34 (22.2%), lack of use of condom 9 (5.9%), 124 (81.0%) shared sharps and 53 (34.6%) reported no vaccine against hepatitis B. Conclusion: sex workers found themselves exposed to various risk situations to the hepatitis B virus, due to the lack of immunization schedule, sexual precocity, multiple sex partners lack of use of condom, habit of sharing sharp objects. It is urgent to invest in health promotion with guidance on the importance of the vaccine, the adoption of protective measures and increased access of sex workers to health facilities. Descriptors: Hepatitis B Vaccines; Women; Sex Workers.
BackgroundInfection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) compromises the immune system of infected people. Homeless people are more vulnerable to HIV infection due to behavioral and sexual factors. The main objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of infection by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in homeless people in a capital of Northeastern Brazil. MethodsCross-sectional study carried out at the Reference Center for the homeless population (Centro Pop), in a capital of Northeastern Brazil, from September/2017 to September/2018. Data collected through a semi-structured form including socio-demographic data, risk and sexual behaviors and anti-HIV serology. Data were analyzed using Person's Chi-square test. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee (CEP) of the Federal University of Piauí. ResultsA prevalence of 3.9% was detected among the 204 homeless people investigated,, that is, 8-204 of anti-HIV reagent, with statistical significance in relation to sexual practice with people of the same sex p ≤ 0.012 and previous sexually transmitted infection (STI) p ≤ 0.002. There was a predominance of males 87.3%, 66.0% were over thirty years of age, 58.3% had less than 12 years of schooling, 84.8% declared they were non-white, 57.3% had no fixed income, 67.0% professed religion, 89.7% declared to be heterosexual, 71.5% did not use a condom during the first sexual intercourse, 28.4% had had sexual intercourse with people of the same sex, and 41.0% had a history of STI. ConclusionsHIV prevalence was higher than in people in the general population. Results show an association between history of any STI and more time on the streets. And also risk behaviors such as high consumption of alcohol and other drugs, low frequency of condom use, increased number of sexual partners.
IntroductionSyphilis is a matter of concern for the reason of transmissibility and high magnitude. In the world there is an estimate that there are 357 million new Sexually Transmitted Infections each year, with a high incidence of syphilis with 5.6 million cases. The infection can affect all age groups and both sexes, presenting higher prevalence in populations of greater vulnerability as female sex workers. Therefore, the main goal was to estimate the prevalence of syphilis and associated factors in female sex workers.MethodsAnalytical cross-sectional study, part of a macroproject entitled ”Outpatient follow-up of HIV and Syphilis in female sex workers”, conducted in Teresina, Piauí, Brazil, with 358 female sex workers, developed since August/2016, in follow-up. Approved by a Research Ethics Committee. Participants were recruited by the Respondent-Driven Sampling (RDS) method and the data collected by structured form.ResultsOf the total number of participants (n=358), the prevalence of syphilis was 7.5%. Statistical significance was obtained in relation to skin colour (CI 40.84–51.16, p≤0.001). Age ranged from 18 to 59 years old, and the prevalence was higher in women aged 25 to 39 (14/3.9% CI 56.99–67.01), from Teresina (23/With no partner (26/7.2%, CI 92.26–96.94), with less than eight years of education at school (19.5% and 5.4%, CI 73.07–81.73). IC 63.38–73.02), catholic (19/5.3%, IC 75.97–84.23), income less than 1 minimum national wage (14/3.9%, CI 39.85–50, 15) and acting in pubs (14/3.9%, IC 45.63–55.97).ConclusionHigh prevalence of syphilis among the younger sex workers, unmarried, catholic, impoverished, poorly schooled and working indoors. It is necessary to reinforce intervention measures, focusing on health education, in order to reduce the chain of transmission and safer sexual practices.
