O artigo busca fazer um estudo teórico sobre as razões e motivações da hospitalidade. Foram consideradas tanto as motivações extrínsecas, impostas pela cultura ou por políticas organizacionais; como as intrínsecas, fruto de características próprias do indivíduo. Hospitalidade é formação de vínculo: para avaliar a necessidade de ser hospitaleiro, é preciso compreender as motivações e as causas da formação de vínculos. A análise foi realizada pela confrontação das conceituações de hospitalidade com as motivações humanas. A hospitalidade pode estar centrada no instinto de autopreservação. Além disso, ela pode ser motivada pelo instinto gregário e sentimentos de empatia. Como está presente em todas as religiões, ela pode ser motivada por imposição ética e religiosa. Ela é também uma forma de socialização. A hospitalidade pode ser motivada por códigos e leis, mas pode ir além e ser vista como um dever moral incondicional e entendida como uma característica fundamental inerente ao humano. A análise permitiu estabelecer quais delas estavam na causa da ação humana no processo hospitaleiro. O estudo mostrou que a hospitalidade é resultante de várias forças motivacionais.
