The duration and the dates at the beginning of the rainy period are strongly correlated, as well as, among the precipitation total and the duration of the rainy period in practically the whole Southeast region of Brazil. In general, from middles of the 1970's, the rainy period has started earlier and lasted more in the Southeast region of Brazil. In regard to the amount of rain, it has been occurred in larger amounts only in the MG3 (Southeast of Minas Gerais) area and in the State of São Paulo. ABSTRACT: CLIMATOLOGY OF THE RAINY PERIOD BEHAVIOR IN THE SOUTHEAST REGION OF BRAZIL
Homogeneous regions and probability density functions of pluvial precipitation in Táchira State, VenezuelaAbstract -The objective of this work was to determine regions of monthly pluvial precipitation based on the seasonal and the probability distribution that best fit to precipitation of those areas in the State of Táchira, Venezuela. Long-term series of 24 throughout 62 years of monthly precipitation data of 25 climatological stations were used. The Ward's clustering methods of analyses was used to group the months with similar monthly pluvial precipitation and also the climatological locations with similar precipitation (homogeneous regions). The adjust of the probability density functions exponential, Gamma, Gumbel, normal, log-normal were evaluated with three parameters as well as Weibull distributions in order to observe monthly precipitation data. The precipitation seasonal variation at the State of Táchira presents three periods statistically defined as: dry, transition, and wet.
ESTIMATION OF REFERENCE EVAPOTRANSPIRATION (ET O ) UNDER FAO STANDARDS WITH MISSING CLIMATIC DATA IN MINAS GERAIS, BRAZILABSTRACT: The FAO 56 Penman-Monteith (PM) equation for reference evapotranspiration (ETo) estimation requires climatic data that are often not available at most weather stations. To overcome the problem of climate data availability, the FAO-56 report describes several procedures to estimate ETo in the absence of solar radiation, relative humidity and wind speed data with their subsequent replacement. Based on this, this study aimed to compare the ETo estimated with the lack of wind speed or relative humidity or solar radiation data and the estimations using complete data for diverse locations within Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The comparison was performed using coefficient of linear regression and determination, the Willmott's index of agreement and each method errors. As a result, it was found that in the absence of relative humidity and wind speed, the PM equation had small estimation errors. In contrast, for radiation data absence, errors were larger in relation to the other variables. With only maximum and minimum temperatures, the FAO 56-PM method outperformed the Hargreaves-Samani one.KEYWORD: missing data, reference evapotranspiration, penman-monteith method.
Vegetation fires are the second largest source of greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. The reduction of the climatic impact of these emissions is related to the vegetation susceptibility to fire (fire risk), as well as to the understanding of possible implications of changes in atmospheric circulation on fire risk in the nearfuture. This study evaluates the environmental susceptibility to fire occurrence based on a Potential Fire Index (PFI). Two climate simulations from the ECHAM5/MPI-OM climate model have been used to calculate the PFI: present day and an experiment for the end of the twenty-first century (2080-2100). The results indicate that the proposed PFI methodology could properly reproduce the areas with the highest fire incidence under present conditions. Moreover, it was found that under greenhouse warming conditions the PFI foresees an increase in the fire risk area, particularly for the Amazon region. We concluded, furthermore, that changes of vegetation predicted to occur in the future lead to substantial modifications in the magnitude of the PFI, and may potentially extend the length of the fire season due to induced longer drought periods as compared to current conditions.
