ABSTRACT CLOSED CANOPY AND LEAF AREA INDEX OF SOYBEAN IN DIFFERENT SPACE ARRANGEMENTSThis research had the purposes to evaluate the time to achieve closed canopy and leaf area index of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) and identify the best space arrangements for higher grain yields of cultivar MG/BR 46 (Conquista). The experiment was carried out at the experimental fields of Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz" (USP/ESALQ), São Paulo State University, in Piracicaba, State of São Paulo, Brazil, during the 2001/2002 growing season. The 30 treatments consisted of different space arrangements, combining 6 row spacing (0.20; 0.30; 0.40; 0.50; 0.60; 0.70 m) with 5 different populations (70,000; 140,000; 210,000; 280,000; 350,000 plants ha -1 ), in a complete randomized blocks design with subdivided plots and three replications. The evaluated characteristics were: time to achieve closed canopy; leaf area index and grain yield. The conclusions are: a) in the cultivar MG/BR -46 (Conquista) cultivated under 0.20 to 0.60 m row spacing, the leaf area index maximum is at the beginning of seed-filling stage (R 5 ); b) the leaf area index becomes higher proportionally with the increase of population; c) the factor that more influenced to shorten the time to achieve closed canopy was the spacement.
Wastewater irrigation may benefit agricultural crops with water and essential nutrients (mainly nitrogen), also affecting soil chemistry. The effects of effluent irrigation on yield, stalk nutrient uptake and on soil chemistry over 16 months were studied in a sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) crop growing on an Oxisol in Lins, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Irrigated plots received 50% of the recommended mineral-N fertilization and 100, 125, 150 or 200% of the crop water demand, while control plots received neither additional N nor water. The high sodium content of effluent resulted in Na inputs as high as 6.2 t ha -1 , along with 1497 kg N ha -1 and 628 kg K ha -1. All the effluent plots except the T125 treatment had higher yields (up to 247 t ha -1 ) than the control (153 t ha -1 ). Significant amounts of N (up to 597 kg ha -1 ) and K (up to 546 kg ha -1 ) were exported by the plant harvest. Additions of nutrients and Na via irrigation were not compensated by stalk growth, causing a low recovery of N, P, Ca, Na, and showing the relative over N fertilization of the crop. Changes in soil pH, H + Al, Ca, Mg and K were small, whereas Na accumulated over time with irrigation. The treated wastewater irrigation is expected to gain increased importance, requiring careful considerations involving the adequate balance between nutritional inputs via irrigation and optimal plant productivity requirements.
Palavras-chave: avicultura de postura, conforto térmico, criação em cama Laying hens welfare evaluation: effects of rearing system and bioclimatic environment on performance and egg qualityABSTRACT -This work aimed to evaluate the effect of two different rearing systems (cages and litter) on productive performance and egg quality of laying hens. The trial was conducted for five experimental periods of 28 days each. Sixty four pullets of the laying strain Isabrown and 64 pullets of the laying strain Hy-Line W-36, with ages of 19 and 21 weeks, respectively, were used. The combination of two rearing systems (conventional cages and floor system with litter) and two layer strains was evaluated using a completely randomized design, with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, and four replicates. The thermal evaluation was performed by analysis of dry air and black globe temperature and relative humidity. For the productive performance analysis, egg production and feed conversion ratio were evaluated. For the egg quality analysis, egg weight, Haugh unit, specific gravity, integrity, clearness and shell thickness were evaluated. No differences on the productive performance between rearing systems were observed. The floor system, when properly projected, can be comparable to the cage system with respect to the productive performance and the egg quality. Moreover, this rearing system could provided better results for egg quality with lesser egg losses although in less favorable thermal comfort conditions. However, mainly for the semi heavy strain, it could result in larger dirty ...
