In view of the increasing ubiquity of qualitative research, particularly mixed method designs, it is important to examine whether qualitative and quantitative models of research can be integrated and how this integration should take place. The recent adoption of best practices for mixed methods research by the NIH seems an opportune starting point for discussion of these questions. This article explores the notion that qualitative and quantitative research, while stemming from fundamentally different "approaches," might yet find an appropriate complementary relationship. We argue, however, that such a complementary relationship depends on an understanding of the notion of approach and an insight into the fundamentally different guiding questions and domains of these 2 research models. Holding that "good fences make good neighbors," this article explores the frontier between quantitative and qualitative research and the challenges attendant to designing and conducting mixed methods research.

Following in the theoretical and methodological roots of the 'Duquesne school,' this work presents a procedure for the phenomenological analysis of narrative data. After describing its 'approach,' this work lays out the procedure for 'thematic moment analysis' using the work of Giorgi as a point of reference. Idiographic results of single datum of being afraid are presented along with the steps through which this 'idiographic thematic narrative' was developed. Procedures for arriving at 'comparative analysis' of more than one piece of data are presented and distinguished from claims of generality sought by works drawing on larger data pools. Finally, this work discusses issues of internal and external validity both specifically in regards to the 'thematic moments' procedure and in terms of phenomenological research in general.

Naturalizing Phenomenology referred to the book Naturalizing Phenomenology (Petitot, Varela, Pachoud, & Roy, 1999). Three aspects of it that Kendler did not discuss but that invite necessary examination for clarification of the relationship between psychology (especially cognitive psychology) and phenomenology are the issue of mathematics, the concern for temporality, and the theoretical dialogue between the natural science approach and the phenomenological approach that takes place throughout that book.The "naturalization" project of the book is inclusionary. The editors, who are the authors of the first chapter of the book, state in that chapter that the contributors of the three last articles "illustrate a more skeptical attitude about the very possibility of naturalizing Husserlian phenomenology" (Petitot et al., 1999, p. 80). Two of those three contributors "argue on the basis of a close examination of Husserl's theory that Husserlianism cannot be naturalized without losing precisely what makes it valuable from either a descriptive or a philosophical point of view" (Petitot et al., 1999, p. 80). The four editors of this extraordinary book are affiliated with French universities. Of the 22 contributors to the volume, only 5 teach at American universities. The book is a model for American psychologists who propose to clarify psychology and phenomenology-both those whose conviction is that psychological research should be "naturalized" and those whose commitment is to the qualitative research tradition of human science. ConclusionKendler (2005) advocated the "moral pluralism" of democracy. A similar position of advocacy for "methodological pluralism" is required (cf. Farber, 1967, p. 6). Recognition and respectful consideration of other methodologies in psychology advance the discipline and safeguard against intellectual parochialism and prejudice.

Previous literature has examined teachers' motivations to teach in terms of intrinsic and extrinsic motives, personality dimensions, and teacher burnout. These findings have been cast in the rubric of differences between teachers and non-teachers and the linear relations between these measures among teachers. Utilizing a phenomenological approach (Giorgi, 1970) to analyze data generated in structured interviews with four tenured professors from small, liberal arts universities whose central mission is teaching, this paper presents the telic or project-ive horizons of teaching -those motives aimed at what is 'not yet' (Heidegger, 1927(Heidegger, /1962. Results revealed that teaching is understood by teachers to be a dialogical enterprise between a teacher and learners across dimensions of transformation, knowledge, and personhood. This dialogue entailed an abiding tension between self and other, activity and passivity, giving and receiving, preparation and spontaneity, instructing and learning, leading and following, asserting and withdrawing. It comprised an orientation to a teachers' vision for the possible future personhood of the teacher and their students and to the character of the world which teachers and learners inhabit together. These findings are discussed in terms of the reviewed literature and as a case in point for a vital complementarity of research approaches. Utilizando un enfoque fenomenológico (Giorgi, 1970) para analizar los datos generados en entrevistas estructuradas con cuatro profesores titulares de una pequeña universidad de humanidades cuya misión central es la docencia, este trabajo presenta los horizontes telic o proyect-ivos de la enseñanza -esos motivos que apuntan a lo que "no es todavía" (Heidegger, 1927(Heidegger, /1962. Los resultados revelaron que la enseñanza es entendida por los maestros como una relación dialógica entre un maestro y sus estudiantes a través de dimensiones de transformación, conocimiento y personalidad. Este diálogo implicaba una tensión constante entre el yo y el otro, la actividad y la pasividad, el dar y recibir, la preparación y la espontaneidad, instruir y aprender, dirigir y seguir, afirmar y retirar. Esto comprendía una orientación de los maestros hacia su posible futura personalidad y la de sus estudiantes y sobre el carácter del mundo en el que profesores y estudiantes cohabitan.
