This essay aims to show how two divergent writings-Pour un Tombeau d'Anatole by Mallarmé and Voyage au bout de la nuit by Céline-actually share the main topic: the relationship between the Work and the Impossible. This impossibility is referred on the one hand to the attempt of literature to overcome death, while on the other hand to the endeavour to blur differences between literature and life. If Mallarmé's goal is to reabsorb the whole world within language Céline's one is to dissolve thought into experience. The poet abolishes the subject in order to reach the impersonality of thought through the abstracting quality of words. The novelist, instead, valorizes the sensible components of language in order to express the subjective experience. In both cases the Work has to deal with the relationship between life and death, literature and reality, singularity and universality. Their synthesis will be proved an impossible purpose, however the very repeated encounter with this failure is what actually allows the Work to live.
