ResumenComo toda categoría identitaria, transexual tiene una definición normativa -en este caso, muy marcada por su origen médico-, hay unos agentes sociales que controlan su uso y existe un conflicto alrededor de los límites que abarca. En este artículo, analizamos cómo el conflicto por la delimitación de esta categoría se articula a nivel individual y colectivo. En base al análisis de entrevistas, grupos de discusión y mensajes en foros de Internet, se ha observado que hay un choque entre dos concepciones de la transexualidad. La primera defiende, desde postulados biologistas, que los criterios para entrar dentro de esta categoría son el cambio corporal y una identificación normativa con el género reivindicado. La segunda propone una interpretación más inclusiva y estratégica de la categoría. El choque entre estas dos concepciones permite entender el trasfondo de este debate aparentemente terminológico e invita a repensar la forma de entender la conexión entre el género y el cuerpo. Identity in dispute: Conflicts surrounding the construction of transsexuality'Transexual', like any other identity category, has a normative definition, which in this case is heavily influenced by its medical origin: there are social agents that control its use and there is conflict surrounding its boundaries. In this article, we analyze how the conflict over the definition of this category is managed through both individual and collective dimensions. Based on the analysis of interviews, focus groups, and Internet forum posts, it has been observed that there is a clash between two perceptions of transsexuality. The first one defends, from a biologist point of view, that the criteria to be included in this category are having undergone or wanting gender-related body modifications and following a normative reproduction of the claimed gender. The second one proposes a more open and strategic interpretation of the category. The clash between these two conceptions allows us to understand what is at stake in this apparently terminological debate and invites us to rethink the way we understand the connection between gender and body.
The state members of the European Union have witnessed the emergence of equality policies which target discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity. These are usually based on the single issue model focusing exclusively on discrimination suffered by LGBT people, however there are other approaches to this issue which take into account the interaction of different axes of inequality, namely, the multiple and intersectional discrimination models. This article analyses the implications of these three models from a theoretical and empirical perspective, pointing out their respective advantages and disadvantages.
El siguiente artículo presenta dos debates teóricos, la distinción entre sexo y género, y entre violencia y agresión, para analizar el modo en el que éstos se encuentran presentes en la Ley integral de medidas contra la violencia de género. Desgranaremos las consecuencias que comportan las concepciones de violencia y género implícitas en la Ley, así como el modelo de relaciones que contribuye a reproducir.
The purpose of this article is to analyse the representation of the body in seven blogs by Spanish women with breast cancer. Using both texts and images, we analyse how they reproduce modern and postmodern logic to represent the wounded body. Based on Frank's proposals, this article draws the conclusion that the women bloggers mainly reproduce the modern logic (characterised by the restitution narrative and a predictable, disassociated and monadic body), but there are elements which break with this logic (the quest narrative, the body presented as associated, dyadic and full of desire, and the acceptance of contingency). After applying Frank's categories, we suggest that the contemporary way of experiencing illness may question the clarity of the modern/postmodern divide.
Muslim migrants are the counter-figures through whom the modern Western identity is shaped. In Islamophobic discourses, they are constructed as inherently sexist and homophobic. In this ideological context, queer migrants coming from Muslim countries occupy an intersectional social location between Islamophobia and homophobia. In this paper we analyze the cinematic representation of queer migrants living in Europe coming from Muslim backgrounds. The aim of the paper is to analyze whether the films reproduce or subvert the Western “gay narrative”. The corpus of analysis is made up of 19 films which were studied through a process of categorization of the relevant fragments in a matrix. The films are classified in three categories according to their approach. The first gathers those films that hold an assimilationist discourse, according to which queer migrants should embrace the Western “gay narrative” and abandon the values of the communities of origin. In the second category, the films propose a hybrid perspective in which characters merge elements from both the country of residence and the cultural background of origin in the exploration of their sexuality and gender. The films in the third category revolve around a metaphorical relationship between a queer migrant and a native person, promoting a reflection on the possibilities of transformative encounters that break the boundaries between supposedly opposed social groups.
