-(Chemical composition of sediments and leaves of mangrove species at the São Mateus river estuary, Espírito Santo State, Brazil). We analyzed nutrient concentrations in leaves and sediments, and element accumulation capacity in foliar tissues of Avicennia germinans (L.) Stearn., Avicennia schaueriana Staft & Leechm., Laguncularia racemosa (L.) Gaertn. f. and Rhizophora mangle L. in four sites along the São Mateus River estuary mangrove, Espírito Santo State, SE-Brazil. In sediment, elements decrease following the sequence: Mg > Ca > Fe > K > Mn > P > Zn > Cu and showed inter and intraespecific variation. Avicennia leaves showed the greatest N, K and Mg concentrations and lowest Ca concentrations. Rhizophora mangle presented the greatest Mn concentration, and Laguncularia racemosa the greatest Fe level. Sediment nutrient concentrations reflected the influence of granulometry in this compartment. Nutrient accumulation in leaves varied according to species and study site but it was not correlated with sediment concentrations. Results confirmed the mangrove role as a biogeochemistry barrier blocking heavy metal up to tropical coastal areas. However, it is necessary periodic sampling so that it can be possible a better understanding of the nutrient dynamic.Key words -heavy metals, leaves, mangrove, nutrients RESUMO -(Composição química do sedimento e de folhas das espécies do manguezal do estuário do Rio São Mateus, Espírito Santo, Brasil). Sedimentos sob A. germinans e R. mangle revelaram menores e maiores teores de macronutrientes, respectivamente, especialmente as bases trocáveis (K, Ca e Mg). The existence of monospecific zones is characteristic of mangroves of the river Mucuri, BA, where Laguncularia racemosa L. and Rhizophora mangle L. occupy regions under higher influence of the tide and Avicennia germinans L. is limited to places with lower salinity. The mangrove vegetation can be classified in riverine forests (margin of the river) and basin forests (interior). Physico-chemical parameters of the sediment and their relationship with the concentration of foliar nutrients were related to the distribution of the species. The results showed that A. germinans dominates sites with lower pH, salinity, charge for cationic exchange and silt values and higher clay content than the other two species. The substract of R. mangle was characterised by higher organic matter and fine sandy structure. Regarding the soil, the riverine and the basin forests presented sandy and loamy soils, respectively. Sediments of A. germinans showed the lowest macronutrient contents while R. mangle showed the highest ones, mainly in the cationic exchanges (K, Ca and Mg). Species restricted to the sites with high macron...
Erythrina speciosa showed 100 % survival until the 60th day of flooding and was able to recover its metabolism. The recovery during soil flooding seems to be associated with morphological alterations, such as development of hypertrophic lenticels, adventitious roots and aerenchyma tissue, and with the maintenance of neutral amino acids in roots under long-term exposure to root-zone O(2) deprivation.
Spatial and temporal variation of the nutrient concentrations in leaves and sediment between the roots of Laguncularia racemosa (L.) Gaertn. f and Rhizophora mangle L. was analyzed in the mangrove forest of the estuary of São Mateus River, Espírito Santo, Brazil. In leaves, the nutrients followed the sequence: N> Ca> K> Mg> S> P> Fe> Mn> Zn> Cu, and there were significant differences between species and sites studied. In general, the levels of K were higher in the dry season compared to the rainy season for both species analyzed while Ca and Cu showed higher concentrations in the rainy season for Laguncularia racemosa. In the sediment, the nutrients followed the sequence: Mg> Ca> Fe> K> Mn> P> Zn> Cu, in general, with lower concentrations at the site where the sediment was sandier. We observed a significant variation of nutrient concentrations in the sediment between the periods analyzed, but the seasonal pattern was not clear for all nutrients. Nutrient concentration profile found in leaves of both plant species was not correlated with concentrations found in the respective sediments. The concentration factor was less than 1.0 for Fe and between 1.0 and 3.7 for Mn, Zn and Cu. These results provide physiological evidences about the relevance of these tree species for the role of mangroves as biogeochemical barriers to the transit of heavy metals.

Based on reports that variables related to photosynthesis (net assimilatory ratio and chloroplast pigments) are more plastic than the morphological and biochemical variables in a climax tropical species, Cariniana estrellensis, under contrasting irradiance, we hypothesised that plasticity of gas exchange variables is higher in relation to growth, biochemical and anatomical variables. Plants that were 14 months old were subjected to 200 up to 2000 lmol m -2 s -1 of photo synthetically active radiation (PAR) for 140 days. Growth increased up to 1400 lmol m -2 s -1 PAR and then decreased at 2000 lmol m -2 s -1 PAR (full sunlight). This was related to the rate of photosynthesis (A) which showed the same tendency as photosystem II performance index (PI ABS ). The greater thickness of the secondary xylem at 1400 lmol m -2 s -1 PAR indicated a higher water conductance capacity. The decrease in specific leaf area, elongation of mesophyll cells, and increase in stomatal density observed at higher irradiances were associated with higher leaf fructose and sucrose concentrations. We concluded that the better growth in partial shade was due to higher photosynthetic capacity. On the other hand, photosynthesis was inhibited equally in full sun and deep shade. The high adjustment capacity of C. estrellensis to wide amplitudes of irradiance was provided by greater plasticity of gas exchange variables in relation to growth, anatomical, and biochemical variables.
