This study investigated the psychological changes which occurred among chronically hospitalized psychiatric patients as a result of participating in a 10-wk. college student visitation program. The results indicate that enhanced facility at word association, improved interpersonal relations orientation, and greater appropriateness and reality in figure drawings all occurred in those patients who received student visitors. The results suggest a general improvement in personality integration in the visited patients, and an actual deteriorations in the dimensions of personality functioning among control Ss who were not visited.
