Report on the use of EEA staplers in gastric cancer surgery. The stapler was used in proximal anastomoses – 83 esophagojejunostomies and five esophagogastrostomies. The following intraoperative problems occurred: insufficiency of the purse string suture (2), lumen of the esophagus too small (1), esophageal wall torn (4), incomplete rings (3). Postoperative complications: 1 (fatal) insufficiency of the stapler line, 6 postoperative deaths not linked to the use of staplers. Attention ought to be paid to the special technique in using stapling devices; the EEA circular stapler is a helpful instrument to keep postoperative leakage and mortality after total or proximal gastrectomy as low as possible.
