Als Dilthey zu seinem siebzigsten Geburtstag zu seinen Freunden und Schülern sprach, schloß er die Ansprache: "Das Ziel sehe ich. Wenn ich auf dem Wege liegen bleibe -so hoffe ich, werden ihn meine jungen Weggenossen, meine Schüler zu Ende gehen." Das, was er als Ziel vor sich sah, drückte er aus mit dem Begriff Leben: dieser ist also bei ihm von wesentlich systematischem Belang, der Zentralbegriff der Philosophie bei einem zur Systematik vordringenden Denker, dessen Lebensverständnis sich von der Dichtung und Geschichte nährt, und zugleich das Mittel, die Philosophie mit der Wissenschaft zu verbinden, mit seiner Wissenschaft vom geistig-geschichtlichen Leben. Die Ausgabe der Schriften Diltheys, die von einem engeren Kreise seiner Schüler besorgt wird, ist jetzt zu dieser systematischen Mitte vorwärts gekommen durch die Sammlung eines Doppelbandes mit dem Titel: "Die geistige Welt" 1 . Von dieser Edition gehe ich aus.Es handelt sich da um eine Reihe von Abhandlungen Diltheys, die sich an sein systematisches Hauptwerk, die "Einleitung in die Geisteswissenschaften", anschließen, dessen erster, in die Geistesgeschichte auslaufender Band 1883 erschienen war. Sie waren zunächst nur als Materialien für den zweiten Band, der die eigentliche systematische Grundlegung geben sollte, gedacht, blieben dann aber, als dieser zweite Band nicht zur Ausführung kam, als Ersatz für denselben zurück. Dadurch hat die Sammlung ein besonderes Gewicht und eine in die gegenwärtige Arbeit der Philosophie eingreifende Bedeutung.Denn Diltheys "Einleitung" hat zwar, seitdem sie, vor vierzig Jahren, erschienen ist, eine breite philosophische Bewegung ausgelöst -oder richtiger, nicht erst ausgelöst: die Bewegung war aus dem Ausland,, aus dem Positivismus der anglo-französischen r Wissenschaf t, herüber· gekommen, besonders durch John Stuart Mills Logik, deren berühmtes sechstes Buch die Logic of Moral sciences behandelte; Dilthey hat sie wieder in die deutsche Heimat der Geisteswissenschaften zurückgeführt 1 Wilhelm Diltheys Gesammelte Schriften.
