The aim of this paper is to analyze the effects of labor market conditions in the origin and the destination on interregional migration in Spain, over the period 1988-2010. A basic theoretical framework is developed and the implications of the model suggest that the effect of labor market conditions on migration can vary, depending on a certain threshold. In a second step, the implications of the model are tested with Spanish data, using a new approach based on the presence of thresholds. We show that interregional migration can be explained by labor market fundamentals if the expected wage gap between the origin and the destination is below an endogenously determinate value.JEL Code: R23, C20, J61

Près de 5 % des immigrés résidant en Espagne ont décidé de quitter le pays en 2009. L’Espagne est récemment devenue à la fois un pays d’accueil des migrants internationaux et un point de départ pour les immigrés. Cette émigration n’implique toutefois pas systématiquement un retour au pays d’origine. L’article analyse l’émigration des immigrés résidant en Espagne, en distinguant les retours au pays des mouvements à destination d’un pays tiers, pour la période 2002-2009. À partir des changements de résidence répertoriés dans les registres de population (EVR), l’auteure étudie les caractéristiques sociodémographiques des immigrés et celles sur les pays de destination et d’origine des migrants, ainsi que leurs effets sur la probabilité de retour. Les immigrés venus d’Asie, d’Afrique et d’Amérique latine ont de moindres probabilités de rentrer dans leur pays de naissance. Les résultats montrent que plus le PNB par tête dans le pays de destination est important ou plus le taux de chômage dans la région d’origine est élevé, plus la probabilité d’émigration vers un pays tiers est forte ; plus l’effectif des immigrés est important par rapport à la population de la région d’accueil, plus la probabilité est forte que l’émigration se fasse vers le pays d’origine.

The aim of the present paper is to analyze the impact of migration dynamics on economic growth and convergence in terms of both the capital/labor ratio and wages. From our results, the following main conclusions can be highlighted: (1) migration positively affects the sending country because of the improvement in the capital/labor ratio and the savings of returning workers; (2) the differences existing between countries do not necessarily disappear in the long term, so the convergence that arises is limited or conditional because it does not necessarily imply an equalization of per capita income, capital/labor ratio, and wages, or the disappearance of migration; and (3) the possibility of migratory flow reversion cannot be excluded in the transitory dynamics. r 2005 Elsevier B.V.
