We propose a new hypothesis, the Oscillating Control Hypothesis (OCH), which predicts that pelagic ecosystem function in the southeastern Bering Sea will alternate between primarily bottom-up control in cold regimes and primarily top-down control in warm regimes. The timing of spring primary production is determined predominately by the timing of ice retreat. Late ice retreat (late March or later) leads to an early, ice-associated bloom in cold water (e.g., 1995, 1997, 1999), whereas no ice, or early ice retreat before mid-March, leads to an open-water bloom in May or June in warm water (e.g., 1996, 1998, 2000). Zooplankton populations are not closely coupled to the spring bloom, but are sensitive to water temperature. In years when the spring bloom occurs in cold water, low temperatures limit the production of zooplankton, the survival of larval/juvenile fish, and their recruitment into the populations of species of large piscivorous fish, such as walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma), Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) and arrowtooth flounder (Atheresthes stomias). When continued over decadal scales, this will lead to bottom-up limitation and a decreased biomass of piscivorous fish. Alternatively, in periods when the bloom occurs in warm water, zooplankton populations should grow rapidly, providing plentiful prey for larval and juvenile fish. Abundant zooplankton will support strong recruitment of fish and will lead to abundant predatory fish that control forage fish, including, in the case of pollock, their own juveniles. Piscivorous marine birds and pinnipeds may achieve higher production of young and survival in cold regimes, when there is less competition from large piscivorous fish for coldwater forage fish such as capelin (Mallotus villosus). Piscivorous seabirds and pinnipeds also may be expected to have high productivity in periods of transition from cold regimes to warm regimes, when young of large predatory species of fish are numerous enough to provide forage. The OCH predicts that the ability of large predatory fish populations to sustain fishing pressure will vary between warm and cold regimes.The OCH points to the importance of the timing of ice retreat and water temperatures during the spring bloom for the productivity of zooplankton, and the degree and direction of coupling between zooplankton and forage fish. in the biomass of large piscivorous fish and a concurrent decline in the biomass of forage fish, including age-1 walleye pollock, particularly over the southern portion of the shelf. Populations of northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) and seabirds such as kittiwakes (Rissa spp.) at the Pribilof Islands have declined, most probably in response to a diminished prey base. We examined quantitative catches of large medusae from summer bottom trawl surveys that sampled virtually the same grid station on the eastern Bering Sea shelf using the same methodology every year from 1979 to 1997. This series shows a gradual increase in biomass of medusae from 1979 to 1989, followed by a dramatic increase in the 1990s. The median biomass increased tenfold between the 1982–1989 and 1990–1997 periods. Most of this biomass was found within the Middle Shelf Domain (50 < z < 100 m). The greatest rate of increase occurred in the north‐west portion of this domain. Whether this dramatic increase in biomass of gelatinous zooplankton has resulted from some anthropogenic perturbation of the Bering Sea environment or is a manifestation of natural ecosystem variability is unclear. However, several large‐scale winter/spring atmospheric and oceanographic variables in the Bering Sea exhibited concomitant changes beginning around 1990, indicating that a possible regime change occurred at this time.

The eastern Bering Sea (EBS) is a highly productive subarctic marine ecosystem that is exposed to considerable climate variability and is noted for conservative management of its fishery resources. The community size spectrum (CSS; relationship between animal abundance and size) of fish captured in EBS shelf bottom trawl surveys was examined for evidence of change over time and fishing and climate effects. The slope (indicative of fish size) and height (indicative of ecosystem productivity, or essentially fish abundance) of the CSS can change due to changes in fishing intensity and climate variability. Linear trends were not observed in EBS groundfish size or abundance during 1982–2006. The abundance of large‐sized fish increased in 2001–2006 relative to 1982–2000. Observed changes in CSS height partially corroborated evidence for decreased productivity of the main fishery target species since the late 1990s, which may have been due to changes in relative species composition. In addition, abundance and size composition of nontarget fish decreased during 1982–2006, possibly related to changes in water temperature. In contrast, however, the size and productivity of fish that were primarily bycatch species increased during 1982–2006. Unlike in other ecosystems, changes in CSS slopes and heights for the EBS were not related to exploitation rates. Changes in the abundance of fish in areas that were normally occupied by cold bottom water (northwest inner and middle shelf) may have been related to the effects of temperature on fish distribution.

Refractory linings in metallurgical furnaces undergo deterioration and wearing with time. The deterioration is caused mainly by thermomechanical mechanisms leading to cracks, chemical degradation and loss of heat transfer capability. Any sudden failure of the lining is dangerous and could affect the structural integrity of the furnace, leading to production loss and costly refurbishment. Non-destructive testing (NDT) and monitoring of refractory lining would lead to better safety, longer use of the vessel, production optimization, controlled maintenance and increased production. Thickness measurements and monitoring of the refractory lining in operating furnaces is possible using Acousto Ultrasonic -Echo (AU-E) technique. This technique uses stress waves of both acoustic and ultrasonic ranges in order to determine thickness and integrity. This thesis presents the details of AU-E technique in addition to laboratory measurements to determine parameters leading to the in-situ measurements. Finally, three case studies are presented to substantiate the theoretical and laboratory measurements.
