Background: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) has become more popular among other bariatric procedures. The histopathologic changes in the sleeve gastrectomy specimens have not been widely investigated among the Turkish population. Objective: The purpose of this study was to delineate these histopathologic findings of the LSG specimens of morbidly obese patients from a single center. Materials and Methods: A prospective database of all patients who have undergone LSG at a single center was reviewed. Demographic parameters, that is, sex, age, and body mass index were examined. The incidence of Helicobacter pylori, and other pathologic findings in the specimens were studied. Results: In total, 253 patients who had undergone LSG between the period spanning from April 2012 to January 2017 were included in the study. The 183 patients were female individuals and 70 patients were male individuals. The mean age at the time of operation was 38.5 years (range, 18 to 65 y). The mean body mass index was 47.7 kg/m2. The pathologic findings were H. pylori positivity in 69 patients (27%), chronic active gastritis in 52 patients (20.5%), chronic gastritis in 135 patients (53.4%), and intestinal metaplasia in 5 patients (2%), whereas normal histopathologic findings were observed in 65 patients (25.7%). As regards surgical complications, the mortality rate was 0%, the staple-line leak was observed in 2 patients (0.8%), and intra-abdominal hemorrhage occurred in 2 patients (0.8%). Conclusions: The majority of patients who underwent LSG had pathologic findings in the resected specimens. With regard to the high incidence of pathologic findings in this study, we conclude that it is essential to send the gastrectomy materials for pathologic investigation after sleeve gastrectomy.
Endometriosis is defined as the presence of ectopic functional endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity. It most commonly occurs in the pelvic organs, including the ovaries, ligaments of the uterus, and the pouch of Douglas. Extrapelvic implantation of endometrial tissue has also been reported in the literature. Extrapelvic endometriosis can be explained by lymphatic/vascular migration or mechanical transplantation of the tissue during surgery. Rectus abdominis muscle endometriosis is a rare phenomenon that usually presents with a palpable abdominal mass and cyclic pain. Ultrasonography (USG), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be effective to define the location and size of the mass. Our patient was a 32-year-old woman presenting with cyclic abdominal pain and the development of an abdominal mass she had noticed for a year. USG and MRI scans revealed an endometrial focus in the right rectus abdominis muscle. Surgical excision with negative margins was performed, since surgical treatment of the lesion is offered as the definitive treatment.
Nodular mucinosis of the breast (NMB) is an uncommon disease involving the nipple-areolar region. It usually presents with asymptomatic, subcutaneous masses with indolent growth in women. Here, we report a 43-year-old man presented with a subcutaneous growth on the left nipple. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of NMB. We report our patient in order to point out this rare disease and think that the recognition of this entity is important for both clinicians and pathologists.
Purpose The increase of eating disorders in the athlete population is remarkable. Disorders concerning eating impulse, bodyweight obsession, negative thoughts about body shape, and accompanying affective disorders are psychological disorders in which eating behavior is seriously affected. A narcissistic personality disorder is defined as a continuous pattern that includes superiority complex, inability to empathize, and the need to be approved. Some narcissistic characteristics such as a desire for unlimited power, success, beauty and to be approved may be related to the eating habits of athletes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the tendency of narcissism and eating disorders in elite athletes. Methods Participants of the study were 223 elite athletes (99 men, 124 women) from different sports branches aged between 18-36 years old. The Narcissistic Personality Inventory-16 and the Eating Attitude Test were used as data collection tools. Spearman Correlation Analysis and Mann Whitney U Test were used in the analysis of the data. Results A very weak positive relationship was found between eating disorder scores and narcissism scores (p<.05). A very weak positive correlation was found between the exhibitionism sub-dimension and eating disorders tendency (p<.05). Conclusions There is a very weak positive relationship between narcissism tendency and eating disorder tendency variables and also between exhibitionism and eating disorders tendency. Therefore, athletes should be informed about nutrition for their performance by following interdisciplinary approaches.
