A population-based case-control study was conducted to estimate the radiation-related risk of thyroid cancer in persons who were exposed in childhood to (131)I from the Chernobyl accident of April 26, 1986 and to investigate the impact of uncertainties in individual dose estimates. Included were all 66 confirmed cases of primary thyroid cancer diagnosed from April 26, 1986 through September 1998 in residents of Bryansk Oblast, Russia, who were 0-19 years old at the time of the accident, along with two individually matched controls for each case. Thyroid radiation doses, estimated using a semi-empirical model based on environmental contamination data and individual characteristics, ranged from 0.00014 Gy to 2.73 Gy and had large uncertainties (median geometric standard deviation 2.2). The estimated excess relative risk (ERR) associated with radiation exposure, 48.7/Gy, was significantly greater than 0 (P = 0.00013) but had an extremely wide 95% confidence interval (4.8 to 1151/Gy). Adjusting for dose uncertainty nearly tripled the ERR to 138/Gy, although this was likely an overestimate due to limitations in the modeling of dose uncertainties. The radiation-related excess risk observed in this study is quite large, especially if the uncertainty of dose estimation is taken into account, but is not inconsistent with estimates previously reported for risk after (131)I exposure or acute irradiation from external sources.
National varieties of Spanish have been studied successfully since the second half of the XX-th century. Te object of this research is the Andean varieties of Spanish, which we intend to study from a psycholinguocultural perspective, which is a novel approach, developed by a number of Russian linguists.Te research is aimed at analyzing some linguistic characteristics of the natural bilinguals of the Andean world and answering the questions, if there is a connection between language and ethnicity and if an ethnic group can have two or more linguistic identities. Between language and ethnicity there is a close and direct interdependence. However similar the language spoken by different ethnic groups living in the same territory may seem, it is only on the surface, as the language is determined by psycho- and linguocultural factors. A monolingual ethnic group does not usually have more than one linguistic identity, but in diglossia situations, a person who acts as two (or more) speaking subjects, using one or more languages depending on the circumstances, brings together two (or more) linguistic personalities.
The Provencal language and lyrics of troubadours had the highest authority in the Middle Ages, having influenced the development of poetic art, in particular, and the development of philological thought, in general, in adjacent territories. Undoubtedly, there were the closest ties of medieval Provence with Catalonia. However, Italy was also involved in the orbit of the cultural life of Provence. The purpose of the article is to show how Italy and Provence were connected in the 13th century and to what extent Italy contributed to the development and preservation of the grammar of the Provencal literary language of that era.
The paper is devoted to a relevant problem: how literature influences the students' cultural self-identification in the process of its study. The purpose of this scientific work is to identify the criteria a modern literature textbook must meet, and to demonstrate the educational role literature plays in the cultural identity formation, illustrated with the example of books on literary theory and the Russian literature history of the 19th -20th centuries. The most appropriate approach to the problem is the culturological one. Based on the statement that the personal involvement in society and culture within the literature studying course is a cultural identification, the authors put forward a number of recommendations aimed at updating the content in educational books related to the disclosure of their cultural context, inter-text, creative links, typological similarities, intermediate issues, media citations. The paper provides examples of textbooks that demonstrate the successful experience of combining a cultural approach with an immanent description of the writer's work, which is of practical value for creating new educational books on literature.
