Nas últimas décadas, algumas transformações aconteceram e impactaram a saúde pública dos países, refletindo na vida das pessoas e na economia mundial. Epidemias de doenças antigas reemergem, como cólera, febre amarela e dengue, ao passo que doenças mais recentes, como Aids, febre hemorrágica pelo vírus ebola, hantavirose, febre do Nilo ocidental, síndrome respiratória aguda grave e influenza aviária, passam a afetar grandes contingentes populacionais ou apresentar risco de disseminação pelo mundo (CARMO et al., 2008). A pandemia da COVID-19 atingiu a sociedade de maneira sem precedentes, originando um conturbado período caracterizado por sobrecarga de serviços de saúde e inúmeras crises econômicas e humanitárias a nível global.Destacam-se, nesse cenário, as ciências da saúde e suas múltiplas subáreas, as quais foram impactadas de maneira particularmente importante. Adaptações e avanços foram necessários para atender as novas demandas e superar as dificuldades oriundas da situação mundial.Sob esse viés, a pesquisa científica e a dedicação dos profissionais de saúde foram de importância imensurável para o desenvolvimento de estratégias de prevenção, tratamento e controle da COVID-19 por todo o mundo. Contudo, a despeito dos grandes avanços alcançados, muito ainda deve ser compreendido sobre as particularidades dessa nova patologia e de seu manejo.Ademais, ressalta-se que muito deve ser avaliado acerca de como o próprio contexto pandêmico afetou a saúde populacional. A título de exemplo, foi observada uma frequente perda de seguimento dos pacientes em instituições de saúde devido ao isolamento social, bem como um aumento importante de hábitos de vida deletérios à saúde, o que provocou impactos muito além daqueles oriundos diretamente da doença COVID-19.A presente obra visa abordar tais temáticas e muitas outras através da apresentação de 5 capítulos que discorrem sobre as experiências vivenciadas em diferentes áreas da saúde durante o contexto pandêmico. Objetivou-se proporcionar ao leitor um conjunto de visões bastante distintas sobre os impactos da COVID-19 e suas formas de enfrentamento, criando uma experiência de leitura rica e proveitosa.No capítulo 1, "Esotropia Comitante Adquirida Aguda Associada ao Uso Excessivo de Smartphones: Relato de Caso", os autores trazem a descrição de um caso de uma enfermidade de histórico recente que, a despeito de sua raridade, pode aumentar sua prevalência de maneira importante em anos vindouros devido às mudanças de hábitos de vida observadas na população mundial durante a pandemia da COVID-19.O Capítulo 2, "Impactos da COVID-19 na Saúde do Idoso", visa ressaltar aspectos relevantes da atenção à população idosa no contexto pandêmico, considerando a particular vulnerabilidade desse segmento populacional frente às dificuldades impostas pela COVID-19. O capítulo 3, "COVID-19: O Tratamento e seus Desafios", trata-se de uma revisão acerca das principais ferramentas diagnósticas e terapêuticas adotadas na atualidade para o manejo da COVID-19, ressaltando as diretrizes de conduta aplicadas em nosso país, bem como alternativas terapêuticas ainda em estudo. O capítulo 4, "COVID-19 e a Saúde da Pele: os Impactos da Pandemia na Área da Dermatologia", traz a perspectiva da Dermatologia sobre as dificuldades impostas pelo contexto pandêmico. Os autores abordam as manifestações cutâneas da COVID-19, a mudança do perfil de queixas nos ambulatórios de dermatologia, bem como as formas de adaptação da prática dermatológica durante a pandemia.
