The issue of waste accumulation has become one of the global problems of humanity. In Ukraine, the main method of waste management is landfill depositing, which is unproductive and affects the ecosystem negatively. However, large landfill sites should be used to produce biogas, thereby reducing the environmental burden and the earned revenue should be used to introduce recycling and a gradual transition to a European waste management policy. The aim of our study was to investigate the state of waste recycling and the possibility of using waste landfills and food with lost consumptive qualities for biogas generation. To analyze the economic efficiency of the installation of biogas equipment in landfills and to investigate the current state of waste management in Ukraine. The research demonstrates that at present in Ukraine the problem of waste accumulation becomes actual. At the same time, the number of large waste landfills is increasing. It is proved that at landfills with an area of more than 50 hectares, the installation of biogas equipment is cost-effective, and the raw material can be distributed at the feed-in tariff, thus solving the energy problem.
Selection of a waste management strategy for a region is a difficult decision that must take into account various frequently contradictory targets and tasks. This article presents the use of a multi-criteria analysis for estimating and selecting the most profitable selection of a regional-metropolitan waste management system. The final solution should take ecological, economic and social aspects into consideration. It was established that the solutions chosen needed to ensure the following: waste stream reduction, social acceptance, and a profitable economic efficiency index.
Abstract. Landfill biogas becomes an important factor in elimination of fossil fuels as a result of fast-growing use of renewable energy sources. The article presents an analysis of operation of the plant where landfill biogas was utilized for energy production. The average annually (gross) productions of electric energy and heat at the plant were 1217 MWh and 1,789 MW, respectively. The average calorific value of biogas was 17 MJ/m 3 , which corresponds to 4,8 kW/m 3 . According to the measurements and actual readings acquired during operation of a cogeneration unit, it can be stated that the CHP system has been working within its average operation limits and still has some power reserves to utilize. Therefore, the authors concluded that a landfill can be operated both as a producer and a supplier of prosumer energy.
Abstract.To fulfill obligations to the European Union on waste management, the authorities of the city of Cracow, decided to build a waste incineration plant. Such investment involves considerable risks, not only financial but also social. The paper conducted a risk analysis based on the index net present value, identifies factors which are particularly exposed, and proposes solutions for reducing its level.
Road dust is viewed as one of the major contributors for metal pollution in urban environment and long-term exposure can cause chronic damage through ways of inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact so they pose a great threat on human health. The article presents a study conducted to determine the concentrations of seven heavy metals in road dust from a chosen street in Cracow, and the impact of heavy metals contamination in surface street dust on human health using Health Risk Assessment. The health risk was assessed using Hazard Quotient (HQ), Health Index (HI) and Carcinogenic Risk (RI).
