Variability of soil attributes under pasturing and Atlantic Forest on the watershed basin scale A B S T R A C TSoil is one of the most important natural resource and its heterogeneity reflects the variability of its chemical and physical attributes. Soil heterogeneity occurs due to the natural process of formation and use by men and management. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the spatial variability of physical and chemical soil attributes and map the spatial distribution of these in Posses sub-basin, Extrema, representative of the Atlantic Forest biome present in southern Minas Gerais. For this, samples (0-0.20 m depth) were collected at 150 points, and their physical and chemical attributes were determined. Variables: Ca, Mg, K, P, pH, organic matter (MO), geometric mean diameter of aggregates (DMG cp) , weighted mean diameter of aggregates (DMP cp ) and flocculation index (IF) showed spatial dependence structure, which allowed mapping from geostatistical techniques. P, DMG sp and DMP sp presented structure with nugget effect, possibly due to an insufficient distance to capture spatial dependence in the sample for these attributes, and human interferences. The variation for Ca can be explained due to lime application, which occurred in some small properties located in the sub-basin. The DMG cp , DMP cp , and IF evaluated were adjusted in line with each other, indicating good soil aggregation. RESUMOA cobertura vegetal é a defesa natural do solo contra a erosão hídrica. ABSTRACTThe plant cover is a natural protection of soil against water erosion. In estimative models of soil loss, the effect of plant cover in the interception of rainfall kinetic energy is the key variable in the modeling of the erosive process. Thus, the aim of this work is to evaluate the efficiency of the plant cover provided by the corn crop and their relations with the phytotechnical attributes of this crop for its respective hybrids. This study was conducted in the corn hybrids demonstrative field at the Federal University of Lavras, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. In order to evaluate the plant cover a display was used that included a horizontal structure, containing holes for viewing the points with and without plant cover, the being readings performed at random and transversally to the crop lines. The phytotechnical attributes evaluated were plant height, stand, dry matter and grain production. It can be concluded that the higher plant cover index was observed for corn hybrids P 30F33, P 30F90, P 3021, STRIKE, FORT, VALENT, UFLA 2001, UFLA 2004, CO 32, D 8480, D 8420 DKB 333B, and DKB 440, proving good quality as a protective soil plant. In the period of larger occurrence of rainfall in the south of Minas Gerais state, the corn crop can minimize the effect of the erosive process. The production of dry matter was well correlated with the plant cover index, and can be used as evidence of soil protection.
Palavras-chave: adequação do uso do solo, capacidade de uso das terras, modelo digital de elevação hidrologicamente consistente Geographic information system on the land use planning ABSTRACTGeographic information system (GIS) can be used on the extrapolation of the specific information, allowing more rapid, lower cost and high accuracy in the land use planning at catchments. The goal of this study was to use GIS as support in the land use planning at Posses catchment (Extrema, MG, Brazil). For this, the digital elevation model (DEM) was determined using the method topogrid and the interpolation quality was evaluated of two ways: comparing contour lines from survey of the catchment (scale 1:10,000) and contour lines derived from DEM and identification of model error by root mean square error (RMSE). From the DEM class of land use planning were expanded and interpreted for the catchment according the Land Use Capability Classification System used for the Brazil. Land uses recommended for the Posses catchment were native grasslands, reforestation and environmental conservancy. Posses catchment has 11% of its lands underutilized, 12% with use above the land use capability, 58% in the appropriate use, 18% of the permanent preservation areas and 1% of the roads.
Soil loss by water erosion is the main cause of soil degradation in Brazil. However, erosion can be reduced by the presence of vegetation. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) makes it possible to identify the vegetative vigor of crops or natural vegetation which facilities the identification of areas with vegetation covers. This information is very important in identifying the phenomena which might be occurring in a particular area, especially those related to soil degradation by water erosion. Thus, the aim of this work was to assess the canopy cover by using NDVI, checking the image accuracy using the Coverage Index (CI) based on the Stocking method, in the Sub-basin of Posses, which belongs to the Cantareira System, located in the Extrema municipality, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Landsat-5 TM images were used. The sub-basin of Posses was very altered in comparison to the surrounding areas. The NDVI technique proved to be a suitable tool to assess the uses that occur in the sub-basin of Posses, as validated by the Stocking methodology. The map derived from NDVI allowed the geographic distribution of different land uses to be observed and allowed for the identification of critical areas in relation to vegetation cover as well. This finding can be used to optimize efforts to recover and protect soil in areas with bare soil and degraded pasture, in order to reduce environmental degradation. The CI has not exceeded 40% for land use classes that occur in the majority of the sub-basin (91%), except in areas of woody vegetation
A Sub-bacia do Salto possui tendência mediana a enchentes, a drenagem é eficiente e bastante ramificada. Palavras-chave: Morfometria, índice de vegetação por diferença normalizada (NDVI), matéria orgânica AbstractRational management in a watershed requires knowledge of several important parameters regarding the hydrology, including morphometric, vegetation cover and soil organic matter (MOS) amounts. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the morphometric characteristics, identify the existence of vegetation using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and analyze the spatial variability of the organic matter amount, obtained through combination of landscape properties of the Salto Subbasin, Extrema, MG, Brazil. Digitalized topographic maps, satellites images and the Inverse Distance Weighted interpolation methods were used to acquire the MOS spatial variability. The Salto Sub-basin has a median tendency for flooding; drainage is efficient and highly branched. Most part of the Sub-basin is occupied by degraded pastures with vegetation with high biomass occurs mainly in headwater areas.
A B S T R A C TThis study aimed to determine and spatialize the soil quality index (SQI), in relation to chemical and physical attributes, and evaluate its use in the payment for environmental services in the Sub-Basin of Posses, Extrema-MG, Brazil, which represents the Atlantic Forest Biome. SQI values were influenced by both the replacement of native forests by stands of eucalyptus and by pastures and annual crops, reflecting in the reduction of soil quality in the sampled layer in the evaluated systems. The spatialization of SQI showed values ranging from 0.40 to 0.80, with some specific areas with high values and others with values above 1.00 (native forest). The reforestation with eucalyptus conditioned most of the soils with low chemical and physical deterioration, due to accumulation of litter. The lowest SQI values are associated with pastures. SQI adjusted to the exponential model, which allowed the use of ordinary Kriging. The SQI has a great potential of use in the payment to farmers who provide services of soil and water conservation.
