O papel da universidade no mundo moderno e no contexto atual de sociedade vem sendo discutido por diversos autores e sujeitos atuantes neste campo, primordialmente na área da Educação. A pressão das políticas estatais no sentido de uma aproximação da universidade com o mercado e as mudanças internas, tendo como base o padrão oriundo desse mercado, têm levantado questionamentos, que precisam ser discutidos. Estas discussões abrangem as mais diversas formações profissionais proporcionadas pela universidade; e o curso de Administração, historicamente construído com base em uma visão dominante da realidade social centrada no mercado, não pode se eximir deste processo de reflexão. Neste contexto, o objetivo deste artigo, um ensaio teórico, é refletir acerca da função da universidade na sua relação com a sociedade, especificamente acerca da formação do administrador, apontando os espaços onde o trabalho do administrador é pertinente e refletindo sobre o conhecimento disponível e disseminado sobre organizações e gestão, apontando os limites da concepção de organização predominante nos ensinamentos da administração. As conclusões apontam para a realidade de um curso fortemente alicerçado em uma visão hegemônica da área, voltado para o mercado, porém insuficiente para dar conta das necessidades dele. Subjacente a esta questão está a literatura utilizada na formação dos administradores no Brasil, a qual reforça a ausência de perspectiva crítica, quer pelo uso de manuais, quer pelo emprego da chamada literatura pop management.
