Camera traps and radiotags commonly are used to estimate animal activity curves. However, little empirical evidence has been provided to validate whether they produce similar results. We compared activity curves from two common camera trapping techniques to those from radiotags with four species that varied substantially in size (~1 kg–~50 kg), diet (herbivore, omnivore, carnivore), and mode of activity (diurnal and crepuscular). Also, we sub-sampled photographs of each species with each camera trapping technique to determine the minimum sample size needed to maintain accuracy and precision of estimates. Camera trapping estimated greater activity during feeding times than radiotags in all but the carnivore, likely reflective of the close proximity of foods readily consumed by all species except the carnivore (i.e., corn bait or acorns). However, additional analyses still indicated both camera trapping methods produced relatively high overlap and correlation to radiotags. Regardless of species or camera trapping method, mean overlap increased and overlap error decreased rapidly as sample sizes increased until an asymptote near 100 detections which we therefore recommend as a minimum sample size. Researchers should acknowledge that camera traps and radiotags may estimate the same mode of activity but differ in their estimation of magnitude in activity peaks.
Species persistence in fragmented landscapes is intimately related to the quality, structure, and context of remaining habitat remnants. Riparian vegetation is legally protected within private landholdings in Brazil, so we quantitatively assessed occupancy patterns of terrestrial mammals in these remnants, examining under which circumstances different species effectively use them. We selected 38 riparian forest patches and five comparable riparian sites within continuous forest, at which we installed four to five cameratraps per site (199 camera-trap stations). Terrestrial mammal assemblages were sampled for 60 days per station during the dry seasons of 2013 and 2014. We modelled species occupancy and detection probabilities within riparian forest remnants, and examined the effects of patch size, habitat quality, and landscape structure on occupancy probabilities. We then scaled-up modelled occupancies to all 1915 riparian patches throughout the study region to identify which remnants retain the greatest potential to work as habitat for terrestrial vertebrates. Of the ten species for which occupancy was modelled, six responded to forest quality (remnant degradation, cattle intrusion, palm aggregations, and understorey density) or structure (remnant width, isolation, length, and area of the patch from which it originates). This study presents a checklist of large and medium size mammals at Estação Ecológica Mata do Cedro, municipality of Carmópolis de Minas, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Between June 2008 and February 2009 we applied sand plots, active search and camera traps for the species inventory. Sand plots were inspected for five consecutive days every two months. We registered 21 species of mammals: 14 on sand plots, 13 by the active search (direct and indirect evidence) and four in the camera traps. Most species were common to other studies in the Atlantic forest, and not listed as threatened on the Brazilian red list, but two (Puma concolor and Myrmecophaga tridactyla) are considered vulnerable to extinction in Brazil. The reserve holds high species richness in relation to other studies and may have an important role in the conservation of the Atlantic forest mammals.

Arid habitats might keep carnivore population density low and therefore vulnerable to environmental shocks and to human-induced changes, at risk of local extinction. To assess their population status, we used camera traps between September 2009 and January 2010. We estimated the density of ocelots using a spatially explicit capture-recapture method (SECR) to be 3.16 ± 0.46 individuals per 100 km 2 . This is a low-density estimate for ocelots, which might reflect the harsh conditions of the arid habitat. Esta espécie possui uma grande variabilidade em suas características ecológicas em toda a sua distribuição, no entanto, o conhecimento desta espécie possui lacunas em vários locais onde ela ocorre. Neste trabalho, nós apresentamos o primeiro estudo desta espécie no semiárido brasileiro da Caatinga. Ambientes áridos podem afetar negativamente as espécies carnívoras e, aliado a alterações antrópicas, esta espécie pode ser levada a extinção local se sua densidade populacional é baixa. Portanto, para verificar o nível populacional da jaguatirica em uma região protegida da Caatinga, instalamos armadilhas fotográficas, entre setembro de 2009 e janeiro de 2010. Com os dados obtidos, calculamos a densidade desta espécie através de métodos espacialmente explícitos (SECR). A densidade estimada da jaguatirica foi de 3.16 ± 0.46 indivíduos por 100 km 2 . Esta estimativa é muito baixa para esta espécie, o que pode ser um reflexo das condições áridas deste ambiente. Um estudo populacional de maior duração pode ajudar a responder se esta baixa densidade é o suficiente para a persistência desta espécie a longo prazo tanto neste, quanto em outros ambientes áridos onde ela ocorre. This paper evaluates the post-dispersal artificial seed predation rates in two areas of the southeastern Amazon forest-savanna boundary, central Brazil. We conducted the survey in a disturbance regime controlled research site to verify if exists an edge effect in these rates and if the disturbance (in this case annual fire and no fire) affects seed predation. We placed 800 peanuts seeds in each area at regular distance intervals from the fragment`s edge. Data were analyzed by a likelihood ratio model selection in generalized linear models (GLM). The complete model (with effects from edge distance and site and its interaction) was significative (F 3 =4.43; p=0.005). Seeds had a larger predation rates in fragment's interior in both areas, but in the controlled area (no disturbance) this effect was less linear. This suggests an edge effect for post-dispersal seed predation, and that disturbances might alter these effects. Even if we exclude the site effect (grouping both areas together) there is still a strong edge effect on seed predation rates (F 3 =32.679; p>0.001). We did not verify predator's species in this study; however, the presence of several species of ants was extremely common in the seeds. The detection of an edge effect in only a short survey time suggests that there is heterogeneity in predation rates and that this variation might affect plant recruitment in fragmented areas of the Amazon forest. Henceforth, this seed predation should be taken in consideration in reforestation projects, where the main source of plants species is from seed distribution.Keywords: Amazon Forest, edge effect, seed predation.Efeito de borda na predação de sementes artificiais pós-dispersão no sudeste da Amazônia, Brasil ResumoEste artigo avaliou a predação de sementes pós-dispersão em duas áreas da borda entre a Amazônia e o Cerrado, no Brasil central. O experimento foi realizado em uma área de estudos controlados, no qual foi verificada a existência de um efeito de borda na predação de sementes e se a existência de distúrbio (área sujeita a fogo anual e área controle) afeta estes valores. Foram colocadas 800 sementes de amendoim em cada uma das duas áreas em distância regulares da borda do fragmento. Os dados obtidos foram analisados através de seleção de modelos por verossimilhança em modelos lineares generalizados (GLM). O modelo completo (com efeitos da distância da borda e da área amostrada com suas interações) foi significativo (F 3 =4,43; p=0,005). As sementes apresentaram uma maior taxa de predação no interior do fragmento em relação a sua borda em ambas as áreas, mas na área controle (sem distúrbio), o efeito foi menos linear. Isto sugere que existe um efeito de borda para a predação de sementes, e que distúrbios podem alterar estes efeitos. Mesmo se o efeito das áreas for removido (considerando ambas as áreas em conjunto), o efeito de borda sobre a predação de sementes persiste (F 3 =32,679; p>0,001).
