Il n'y a rien de plus dificile pour un historien que de situer un de ces mots si fréquents dans l'histoire d'une langue et d'une civilisation qu'ils inissent par la déinir, au point qu'on renonce le plus souvent à les traduire. Le mot itna est de ceux-là, sinon qu'en outre, plus encore que d'autres, il induit un sens volontairement large et vague. La itna, c'est un désordre, ou un trouble, ou une révolte, ou une sédition. On sait, ou on devine seulement que le sens est plutôt péjoratif. On sait aussi qu'il s'étend à tout l'arc social, et que le Prophète luimême, haranguant les musulmans, les mit en garde contre la itna domestique au coeur de laquelle il plaçait, semble-t-il, son épouse préférée 'Aïsha. Ce qu'on croit constater aussi, c'est que la itna est un peu plus particulièrement présente en al-Andalus. Il est probable que la conjonction de la tradition amoureuse de la itna et de son sens politique a largement inspiré l'écriture du Tawq al-Hamâma d'Ibn Hazm (vers 1025), comme j'ai tenté de le montrer ailleurs. Mais plutôt que de revenir sur cette oeuvre, et sur la itna qui mit in au califat des Omeyyades de Cordoue (1009-1031), je voudrais élargir la rélexion à une histoire plus large de l'Islam médiéval, ou du moins de ses premiers siècles. Et j'ai choisi pour guide l'Histoire universelle d'Ibn Khaldûn 2 .

Sa théorie permet de lire l’évolution actuelle des pays arabes, mais aussi par exemple celle de l’Amérique latine, dans une autre perspective que celle d’une démocratisation uniforme et universelle. Ce qui mérite discussion.
