En las últimas décadas las ciudades a nivel mundial han sido objeto de profundas transformaciones producto de las políticas públicas y la normatividad aplicadas a su desarrollo, al modelo dominante de urbanización capitalista y los complejos cambios socioespaciales que experimenta. Estas situaciones generan tensiones entre los diferentes actores que habitan la ciudad, expresándose en movimientos ciudadanos de defensa del espacio urbano, el entorno y los recursos naturales del territorio. A través de una etnografía digital, el artículo analiza cómo la defensa del espacio urbano ante el embate de la gentrificación contemporánea constituye una de las principales luchas de los movimientos ciudadanos de la Ciudad de México para hacer valer su Derecho a la Ciudad. Como resultados, se establece que este derecho al estar consagrado en la Constitución Política de la Ciudad de México como un derecho humano fundamental más, marca el inicio de una nueva etapa donde la participación ciudadana podrá incidir en el rumbo de las políticas públicas aplicadas al futuro desarrollo urbano de la ciudad.

La ciudad toma un rol determinante en lo político, económico y social al buscar su incorporación dentro de la dinámica globalizante, lo cual crea la existencia de diversas zonas al interior de la ciudad. El artículo aborda de manera general los procesos de revitalización de las zonas centrales de dos ciudades latinoamericanas (Santiago y Ciudad de México) y sus cambios socio-espaciales que se generan. Para el caso latinoamericano, la evidencia muestra que la revaloración y rehabilitación de centros históricos y barrios coloniales para crear mejores lugares de tránsito, ocio y vida para sus habitantes, implican una fuerte transformación de los mismos, con realidades dispares, fragmentación urbana, segregación y gentrificación. Además, esto ha llevado a que las ciudades concentren actualmente la mayor cantidad de población a nivel mundial, teniendo que para el 2014, el 54% de la población mundial residía ya en áreas urbanas, y estimándose que para el 2050 la cifra alcance un 66%
Actualmente, sumergidos en un mundo globalizado, es posible observar que nuestra forma de generar, percibir y vivir la ciudad ha cambiado. Hoy la visualizamos como un complejo conglomerado que involucra tanto a las más diversas actividades humanas como a procesos urbanos que tienen influencia sobre otras ciudades de escala regional o global en las que los flujos de capital y de mercancías, así como la movilidad de la población, son quizá su mayor constante. Este momento histórico denominado tercera modernidad encierra un conjunto de cambios globales al interior de la sociedad, la economía, la política y el urbanismo.
Ante una realidad compleja, cambiante y contradictoria, las áreas del conocimiento están obligadas a dialogar transdisciplinariamente para construir respuestas y soluciones a las múltiples necesidades sociales, reinventarse y evolucionar, impactando positivamente la formación de nuevos cuadros de profesionales. Ante ello, el diseño requiere fortalecer la investigación en sus procesos de enseñanza para mejorar su práctica y consolidar su pertinencia social. En este escenario de diálogo disciplinar y transdisciplinar, surge un cuestionamiento ¿Cómo fortalecer la investigación desde la enseñanza del diseño? La postura abordada discute la necesidad de implementar acciones para fomentar la cultura de la investigación para una formación integral de los profesionistas del diseño, pues de no hacerlo, se corre el riesgo de que los futuros diseñadores no sean aptos para integrarse a equipos inter y transdisciplinarios de trabajo. Por tal motivo, el presente artículo reflexiona sobre la necesidad de una enseñanza del diseño integral, con base en el diálogo disciplinar que evidencia las fortalezas de consolidar a los docentes y estudiantes en una cultura de la investigación ante los desafíos del mundo actual.
