Este artigo traça alguns contornos da imaginação nacional bolsonarista a partir de um caso motivador: um crime ocorrido no sul do Brasil no final de 2020. Para tanto, analisamos alguns discursos do presidente do Brasil, Jair Bolsonaro, e de membros significativos do seu governo, como Hamilton Mourão e Sérgio Camargo, em reação à acusação da opinião pública de que o assassinato de um homem negro por dois seguranças de um supermercado em Porto Alegre teria sido motivado por racismo. Partimos do princípio de que a semântica contida nesses discursos tem lastro nas reflexões históricas do pensamento político e social brasileiro. Em sua diversidade, a narrativa construída pela ideologia bolsonarista em reação ao episódio da morte de “Beto” apresenta o artifício de recuperar algumas formas de representação do passado brasileiro, em especial ao atualizar o mito da democracia racial e ao dar centralidade à problemática da corrupção como “verdadeiro problema nacional”. Nossa hipótese é que a apropriação dessas tópicas acaba solidificando determinada forma de imaginação política do Brasil, que tanto implica uma adesão social ao discurso bolsonarista quanto estimula determinadas formas de ação de grupos e sujeitos na realidade prática.
