El VII Congreso Centroamericano de Antropología convocó a reflexionar sobre el desarrollo de la disciplina en la región. El presente volumen, sin ser una memoria puntual, reproduce en su primera parte los textos del homenaje al Dr. Otto Schumann Gálvez, a quien se dedicó la reunión. En la segunda ofrece las visiones panorámicas sobre antropología social, arqueología, museografía, lingüística y antropología biológica presentadas en conferencias magistrales y los comentarios que se suscitaron. La tercera parte da cuenta de las preocupaciones del presente: patrimonio cultural, migración, identidad, género, salud, cosmovisión, tradición oral y antropología crítica; incluye las ponencias recibidas que por ocuparse específicamente del ámbito centroamericano y el Sureste de México contribuyen a ubicar la práctica antropológica en la zona, disímil en profundidad, heterogénea en enfoques y temas como lo atestigua el libro.
Este trabajo repasa la justificación y objetivos planteados en la fundación de los centros de investigación de ciencias sociales asentados en Chiapas, los contrasta con el énfasis disciplinario, temático, ubicación y escala de 956 artículos publicados en 68 volúmenes de los anuarios y revistas editadas por dichas entidades entre 1985 y 2010, como primer paso para una caracterización de la comunidad académica local.
En el escrito se explora la invisibilización de la diversidad religiosa en textos e imágenes de los libros escolares de ciencias sociales para educación básica en los países de Centroamérica, la cual es producto de la decimonónica narrativa en torno a la nación homogénea —una religión, una lengua, una cultura—, que sigue dominando a pesar de la proliferación del discurso multicultural desde el quinto centenario del arribo europeo a América y la transición hacia regímenes más democráticos en las últimas décadas, que propugnarían por una convivencia intercultural basada en la lealtad cívica o el patriotismo constitucional.
