Transactions in GIS. 2020;24:72-84. wileyonlinelibrary.com/journal/tgis | INTRODUC TI ONRapid development of technology in recent decades has not only introduced new possibilities in GIS and cartography, but also transformed them. The main focus has shifted from traditional mapping and analysis of spatial data to new, digitally better-supported approaches. For example, experts can now produce three-dimensional models from digital images, have to deal with different types of big data, and are finding ways to apply machine learning to Abstract Companies and individual developers have recently put serious effort into improving web mapping libraries. A significant front in this development is hardware-accelerated vector graphics. Owing to those efforts, and the continuously evolving World Wide Web, users can visualize large vector layers, and even animate them. On the other hand, this rapid development cannot be observed with raster data. There are some data abstraction libraries for reading raster files, although web mapping libraries do not use them to offer raster capabilities. Since there are no mature raster management pipelines on the web, this study explores two inherently different techniques for handling raster data. One of them uses the traditional, texture-based method. The other is a hybrid technique rendering raster layers as vectors, overcoming some limitations of the raster model. While the traditional technique gives a smooth user experience, the hybrid method shows promising results for rendering hexagonal coverages.
Recent trends show that developers behind some of the most popular web mapping libraries put excessive work into creating custom hardware-accelerated rendering engines. Other libraries focus on functionality rather than visualization. From the perspective of the developer using these libraries an important question arises: is it necessary to use a WebGL-powered library for 2D web mapping? The answer was found through the implementation and evaluation of a simple WebGL renderer for the open source Web mapping library OpenLayers. It extends the previous, texture-based implementation with line-string, polygon, and label-rendering capabilities. Through various benchmarks, the benefits of using a WebGL rendering engine over the traditional, but nowadays widely supported and – in most cases – hardware-accelerated HTML5 Canvas renderer are assessed. Contrary to the current trends in Web mapping, results suggest that using the Canvas Application Programming Interface (API) is sufficient for smaller Web maps (up to around 2000 features and 60,000 vertices) using static vector data. WebGL only gives a noticeable performance boost with maps using large vector layers, such as Web GIS clients.
Studying the relationship between river water and shallow groundwater (SGW) during flood events is a research topic receiving increasing attention for many reasons. This phenomenon was studied with respect to Mohács Island of the Danube (Hungary) in an area protected by a levee. Floods only infiltrate into the island through the aquifer, where production wells for drinking water supply are located. Our objective was to reveal how the Danube and water abstraction from production wells control groundwater levels in the observation wells, and we also studied the effect of the precipitation events and the lag times of the influencing variables compared to the peak of groundwater waves in observation wells. The effects of these factors were summarized by a linear regression model (LM) with lag times. We developed an application because we had time-series for thirty groundwater wells and five major flood events of the Danube. Kriging was used to generate impact maps of the Danube and production wells. A propagation map of the Danube flood wave into the groundwater aquifer was also generated. We used geological information to explain the findings that the river flood waves propagate with the same wavelength and decreasing amplitude in the covered aquifer and with an elongated wavelength in uncovered conditions.
A távérzékelés tudományának manapság csupán apró szeglete a multispektrális szenzoroktól származó képek GIS rendszerek segítségével történő elemzése. Ezek a képek túlnyomó részben műholdakról származnak. Jelenleg a Landsat 7 ETM+ (Enhanced Thematic Mapper +), és a Landsat 8 OLI (Operational Land Manager) szolgáltat folyamatosan frissülő képeket nyolc, illetve kilenc spektrális tartományban. Tipikusan ilyen adatok a normalizált indexek. Ahogy Eredics (2007) is összefoglalja, ezek dimenzió nélküli mérőszámok.
