AbstractSurveys on the structure of neurological in-patient care are being conducted by the German Neurological Society since 1980. The present survey covered the year 2003 and addressed 299 hospital departments of neurology and neurological hospitals, of which almost 70 % responded. In comparison to the last relevant survey covering 2000, the average length of stay has further decreased. A majority of university departments include neurological intensive care units, however, the number of neurological ICUs has slightly decreased. Stroke units have been established in the majority of university and general hospital departments. Since 2000, there has been a decrease of medical and nursing staff in university departments. Technological equipment remains stable on a high level. The number of departments that perform CSF diagnostics themselves is decreasing. A majority of departments, however, still conduct CSF cytology.
