Kobaltpulver werden chargenweise in einer Schwingmühle behandelt und deren katalytische Eigenschaften an Hand der Benzolhydrierung geprüft. Ein Anstieg des Benzolumsatzes und ein Abfall der maximalen Reaktionstemperatur mit der Mahldauer beruhen auf einer mechanischen Aktivierung des Kobalts.
Weitgehend amorphisierter Quarz und Nickelpulver wurden gemeinsam in einer Schwingmühle aktiviert. Die Benzolhydrierung dieser NiSiO2‐Trägerkontakte verläuft mit der Aktivierungszeit über ein Maximum und kann am besten durch die Gitterstörungen (Störamplitude) des Nickels erklärt werden. – Schwingmahlungen der Trägerkontakte bei steigender Temperatur führen zu einem Rückgang der katalytischen Aktivität, die wiederum mit der Ausheilung der Gitterstörungen des Nickels konform geht.
Es wird gefunden, daß ein natürlicher Kiruna‐Magnetit durch Schwingmahlung so aktiviert werden kann, daß er gegenüber H2S hochaktiv wird. Messungen der H2S‐Aufnahme an Magnetitchargen verschiedener Mahldauer zeigen, daß ein Aktivitätsmaximum gegenüber H2S auftritt. Bei hoher Mahldauer fällt die H2S‐Aufnahme unter den Wert des nichtaktivierten Magnetits. Während die Primärteilchengröße erwartungsgemäß mit der Mahldauer abfällt, durchläuft die Gitterstörung — genau wie die Aktivität gegenüber H2S — ein Maximum. Bei hoher Mahldauer ist ein Ausheilen der Gitterstörungen des Magnetits festzustellen. Damit wird der Ordnungszustand des Kristallgitters als wichtigstes Kriterium für die H2S‐Aktivität erkannt.
Zum Katalysator mechanisch aktiviertes hexagonales Kobaltpulver wird einem Erholungsprozeß bei verschiedenen Temperaturen und Zeiten unterzogen. Die katalytische Aktivität, die Primärteilchengröße, die Gitterstörungen, das thermische und magnetische Verhalten der Proben werden untersucht. Über die Aktivierungs‐energie für den Erholungsprozeß kann gezeigt werden, daß für den aktiven Gitterzustand der mechanisch aktivierten Kontakte neben der Gitterstörung eine SCHOTTKY‐Fehlordnung entscheidend ist.
