Bisprotic Acids with Inverted pK-Sequence, 1
HomophenolphthaleinThe long known prototype of a bisprotic acid with K , < K,, phenolphthalein (AH,, n = 0), is surpassed by the so far unknown homophenolphthalein (AH,, n = I), its constant for ring opening K , being higher by a factor of 35. Thereby the indicator reaction AH, + AzQ (KSm = 8.1) occurs within the smallest pH interval1 (1.38) so far known exchanging 1.39 protons.
