Fig. 13).
The HÜCKEL‐type LCAO‐MO's Φj and their corresponding eigenvalues Ej have been tabulated for the seven lowest members of the benzologous tropylium cations, together with their charge densities, bond orders and free valencies.
The uv. absorption spectra of the conjugate acids of the three isomers 1, 2‐benzoazulene (II), 4,5‐benzoazulene (III), 5,6‐benzoazulene (IV) and of azulene (I) have been determined, as well as the relative basicity of I, II, III and IV. Correlation of these experimental data with predictions based on zeroth order MO theory supports the proposed formulation of the conjugate acids of I and II as derivatives of the tropylium cation and of III and IV of the benzotropylium cation from a qualitative point of view.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
