Polydaktylia -In remembrance to Eurohippus messelensis -a case reportPolydactilia occurs seldom but is a prime example for atavisms and therefore a sign of gradual evolutionary change. The difference between poly-and schistodactyly, the features of atavistic polydactyly as well as possible causes are addressed. A following case study is about a 3 weeks old female Icelandic foal with a congenital malformation of the right front leg. Radiographic examination revealed a completely developed MC II including formation of proximal, middle and distal phalanges. In the area of the coronary groove the hoof was grown together. The supernumerary digit was amputated. Surgical approach and postoperative management is explained. Finally the discussion deals with the prognosis which was good in the present case, although the accretion was a possible complication.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
