The results showed that the modified stalk sponge of Z. mays had a good capacity for biosorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II). The kinetic behavior was described by the pseudo-second-order model for both metallic species. The experimental isotherms obtained at different temperatures were fit with Langmuir and Freundlich models. Thermodynamic parameters ΔH(0) and ΔS(0) were calculated using the van't Hoff equation, and the results show that Pb(II) and Cd(II) sorption by modified stalk sponge of Z. mays is an exothermic and spontaneous process.

This research presents a study of environmental monitoring at different sampling sites from the Metropolitan Area of the Valley of Toluca (MAVT), Mexico, using mosses (Leskea angustata(Tayl.) andFabronia ciliaris(Brid.)) and soil samples. The epiphytic mosses and soils were sampled in two campaigns within two periods of the year, a rainy and dry-cold season. The selected sampling sites included urban regions (UR), transitional regions (TR), and protected natural areas (PA). The samples were analyzed by the Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) to determine As, Cr, Hg, and Se principally. However, due to the versatility of the analytic technique used, other elements including Cs, Co, Sc, Sb, Rb, Ce, La, Eu, and Yb were also detected. Statistical analysis (As, Cr, Hg, and Se) was carried out with principal components and cluster analysis methods; this revealed that a good correlation exists between metal content in mosses and the degree of pollution in the areas sampled. The obtained results in mosses showed that the concentrations of As, Cr, Co, Cs, Rb, Ce, La, and Yb increased with respect to the concentrations obtained during the first sampling, whereas Se, Sc, Sb and Eu, concentrations were decreased. For As and Hg, the concentrations were similar in both sampling periods. The soil samples present the most significant concentration.

This work presents a study about the chemical structure of titanium oxide (TiO) particles synthesized by plasmas using titanium tetrapropoxide, Ti(-O-CH 2 -CH 2 -CH 3 ) 4 . In plasmas, practically all chemical bonds are susceptible to participate in the reactions producing different results than those obtained by the traditional chemical routes. The particles obtained this way are semispheres and fibers grouped in random and layered structures in the 120 -500 nm interval and mean diameter of 86.4 nm (fibers) and 308.6 nm (semispheres). The analysis of the resulting TiO structure was performed by IR and XPS finding that the main chemical state of Ti in these conditions was O 2 -Ti-O 2 (Ti surrounded by O) which is part of the precursor structure, however, in O, the main chemical state was Ti-O-Ti formed with the rupture of the precursor Ti-O-C bonds. These last bonds reduce the conjugation between the structure of both elements, O 2 -Ti-O 2 and Ti-O-Ti, to produce organometallic compounds. Other chemical states appeared showing consecutive dehydrogenation steps during the synthesis with the formation of multiple bonds as a consequence of the continuous collisions in the plasma. These results allow us to follow the chemical reactions promoted by this kind of plasmas to produce TiO nanoparticles which are essentially conformed of intensive dehydrogenation.
