Résumé. ‐ Dans ce travail, nous montrons que le mécanisme d'inflammation aux basses pressions des mélanges de méthane et d'oxygène, dont la teneur en oxygène est supérieure à 63%, est identique à celui des mélanges oxydriques. Nous arrivons à cette conclusion en nous basant sur les faits suivants: 1°‐Au moment où la flamme apparaît dans un mélange de composition initiale CH4+2O2, il n'y a pratiquement plus de méthane présent. Celui‐ci a été consommé durant la période d'induction et l'explosion se déclenche dans un milieu dont la composition est approximativement la suivante: CH4: 3,7%; CO: 14,8%; H2: 2,9%; O2: 17,2%; CO2: 10%; H2O: 50%. 2°‐Les mélanges contenant moins de 63% d'oxygène ne présentent plus qu'une seule limite d'inflammation. 3°‐L'azote exerce la même influence sur la seconde limite d'inflammation du méthane que sur celle de l'hydrogène. 4°‐En tenant compte de la composition réalisée au moment de l'inflammation et en appliquant la formule empirique donnant l'action des gaz inertes sur la limite P2 des mélanges oxhydriques, on peut calculer la limite P2 des mélanges méthane+oxygène et l'on trouve ainsi des valeurs en bon accord avec l'expérience. 5°‐Durant la période d'induction, le méthane joue un double rôle, celui de producteur de CO et d'H2, déjà signalé, et celui d'inhibiteur. Ce n'est qu'au moment ou celui‐ci est pratiquement transformé que la flamme peut s'établir. 6°‐A partir des mécanismes actuellement admis pour la combustion du méthane, de l'hydrogène et de l'oxyde de carbone et de la réaction CH4+OCH2+H2O, qui selon nous tient compte de l'effet inhibiteur du méthane, nous avons pu établir une condition limite d'éxplosion (P2) en bon accord avec l'expérience. II est montré ensuite que les théories selon lesquelles l'explosion serait due au d'éveloppement d'un processus en chaînes à ramifications dégénérées sont insoutenables dans le domaine d'inflammation aux basses pressions. Par contre, au‐dessus de la limite supérieure P3, il n'y a aucune objection fondamentale contre ces théories.
