For the first time ever, penlotron osdllations above 90 GM (at the harmonic: f "4fJ were observed from a peniotron designed for low power and utilizing a straight 'crW+vaveguido' suction aa cavity. However, to obtain good pertormance of the tube, a low cost and highly precise circuit fabrication technique was developed where the circuit is fabricated from essentially a single block of material.Discussed are the subsequent development of high m r (20 -100 kw) 95-GHz peniotron amplifiers operating in a 10 vane rising sun magnetron circuit and the fabrication and cold testing of a 2(ucW oscillator. Also discussed are a novel electron gun design and the design and test results of both low and high power broad-band 95 GHz RF windows.
Using the concept of beam modes and beam mode lines described in the preceding paper, it is shown that, the classical small-signal dispersion relation of gyrot.rona derived in ]980 by Chu et at. contains terms which describe the relative interplay of peniotron and gyrotron Interact.icua in gyrot.ron-t.ype devices. However, duo to the redial displacements of the beam (electrons which appear to have been neglected by Chu et ai.), the stabilizing terms must be modified. When the location R o of the guiding centres is such that J,_m(x) disappears. no a-harmonic gyrotron interaction can occur. leaving peniot.ron interaction as the only possible type of interaction.
