Cet article montre comment, au sein des filiales de Lyon et de l’Ain de la Société Binet, s’est posée la question du rôle de la psychologie dans l’exercice du métier d’instituteur. Les instituteurs n’ont pas vocation à devenir des psychologues, mais ils pourraient prendre en compte certains apports de la psychologie expérimentale dans l’enseignement lui-même et dans l’identification des aptitudes des élèves. Les théoriciens lyonnais Chabot et Locard cherchent ainsi à montrer que le regard scientifique est compatible avec le regard singulier de l’enseignant. Pour les instituteurs syndicalistes – qui mettent en œuvre la filiale de l’Ain –, un enseignement fondé scientifiquement devrait susciter un nouvel essor de l’engagement syndicaliste et renforcer l’ambition démocratique de l’école.
