Résumé L’écriture de l’extase, comprise ici essentiellement dans sa dimension religieuse, s’incarne dans trois champs “ textuels ” privilégiés à l’époque moderne ( xvi e - xviii e siècle) : l’écrit testimonial du mystique, la théorisation du théologien qui tente de distinguer, clarifier et rationaliser un vocabulaire et des catégories toujours suspectes aux yeux de l’orthodoxie chrétienne, mais aussi l’image qui tente de représenter une expérience parfois spectaculaire mais bien souvent aussi “ secrète ”, ou discrète, car avant tout intérieure. Ces différentes expressions de l’extase ne se contentent pas de témoigner, de théoriser ou de visualiser une expérience extatique déjà advenue. Par leurs propres dispositifs narratifs, stylistiques et poétiques, elles peuvent prétendre susciter, auprès du lecteur ou du spectateur, une expérience équivalente à celle dont elles témoignent. La communication porte sur l’analyse d’un tableau de Charles Le Brun, La Descente du Saint-Esprit (Musée du Louvre), dont un précieux témoignage, livré par le biographe de l’artiste, évoque l’effet, d’ordre surnaturel, qu’il occasionna sur le commanditaire de l’œuvre : Jean-Jacques Olier, fondateur du Séminaire de Saint-Sulpice. L’extase (mystique) est, faut-il croire, le résultat d’un événement d’ordre surnaturel, elle serait aussi, supposons-nous, le résultat d’une construction formelle productrice de ce type “ d’effets ”.
