La recherche se déroule en grande section de maternelle dans un quartier socialement défavorisé. L'objectif est de dégager les conditions éducatives les plus favorables à la construction de connaissances sur la langue écrite par tous les enfants. Cette recherche s'inscrit dans le programme du CRESAS qui définit progressive¬ ment une «pédagogie interactive». Mis dans une situation favorisant l'exploration en petits groupes, de très jeunes enfants construisent des savoirs à travers des activités qu'ils se définissent eux-mêmes. Des dynamiques interactives se développent, qui permettent à chacun de travailler à son niveau en profitant des savoirs et des idées exprimées par les autres. En suscitant ainsi le partage des savoirs recelés par les groupes, on assure la continuité éducative car on permet aux enfants de développer eux-mêmes leurs propres démarches d'apprentissage et on favorise l'avancée de tous. On approche ainsi les objectifs fondamentaux de la nouvelle politique pour l'école primaire.
