: Three traditions contnbute to the way the adjective is described in the XVlIth and XVIIlth centuries : the Rhetorical tradition where the term 'epithet' (< the Greek epilheloh) is still used, the traditon of general grammar and logico- semantic analysis which employs the term 'adjective', and, lastly, that of 'correct use' which also has recourse to the exclusive use of 'adjective'. But, in spite of their specificity, these traditions link up, and, in the second half of the XVIIlth century, attention is brought to bear on the two terms and their content in the respective writings of Dumarsais, Roubaud and Marmontel. While Marmontel emphasises the necessity of adapting epithets to the constraints of situation, Roubaud 's remarks on the place of the epithet can be considered as the first tentative formulation of presupposition.
Françoise Berlan : The status of the example in Abbé Girard's Synonymes françois.
The articles in abbé Girard's Synonymes françois (1736) reveal constant characteristics of the microstructure of a dictionary : the order of succession definition /example, the paired statements in opposition, and the italics reserved for the key-words, all constitute a stable organisation. Nevertheless, the unique enunciative source at times weakens the frontier between usage and mention, explication of meaning and discourse about the world. Definition and example are in fact in close cooperation : the example, heuristic and differentiating, although coming after in the article, is at the source of the gloss that has the status of definition.

Il semble que les animateurs des Cahiers Georges Sorel aient pris conscience de ce risque et souhaitent aujourd'hui ouvrir leur revue A des travaux depassant le seul cas de leur auteur 6ponyme.
