Le présent article a pour objectif d’éclairer la manière dont une réflexion relative au langage peut être imprégnée d’un imaginaire politique. Le travail d’Émile Benveniste sur l’énonciation est envisagé dans sa dimension terminologique, qui permet de mettre en lumière les liens entretenus entre la théorie du linguiste et un « air du temps » politique. Après une mise au point théorique sur la notion d’« imaginaire » et un bref aperçu rétrospectif sur les liens entre la théorie de l’énonciation et l’idéologie marxiste, l’article propose une lecture rapprochée des travaux de Benveniste qui gravitent autour de ses articles canoniques sur l’énonciation (du Vocabulaire des institutions indo-européennes jusqu’aux brouillons, en passant par ses interviews). L’objectif est de mettre en évidence des constellations terminologiques, des harmoniques non pas forcément conceptuelles, mais strictement rhétoriques, qui témoignent d’un ajustement du verbe du linguiste aux grandes topiques du discours social.
