In the last ten years, more than 1,500 large burrows have been discovered in southern and southeastern Brazil, dug in rocks that include weathered granitic and basaltic rocks, sandstones, and other consolidated sediments. Their presence in geological units of Plio-Pleistocene age suggests that large extinct mammals produced these structures. The internal walls exhibit scratches and grooves left by the animals that inhabited these structures. The burrows are straight or slightly sinuous tunnels that measure up to tens of meters in length. One smaller type measures up to 1.5 meter in diameter, and the larger type can reach 2 meters in height and 4 meters in width, suggesting that such structures have been produced by at least two kinds of organisms. This contribution proposes a classification for these ichnofossils under the generic designation Megaichnus igen. nov., consisting of two ichnospecies identified so far: M. major and M. minor ispp. nov. Although the exact identity of the producers of the burrows is yet unknown, the dimensions and morphology point to ground sloths and giant armadillos.
Abstract PALYNOFACIES AND DEPOSICIONAL PROCESS FROM BOTTOM SEDIMENTS OF QUADROS LAKE, RIO GRANDE DO SUL COASTAL PLAIN, BRAZILThis study is based on the qualitative and quantitative characterization of particulate organic matter (palynomorphs, opaque phytoclasts, non-opaque phytoclasts and amorphous organic matter-AOM) and statistic methods of analysis from bottom sediments of Quadros Lake, of Rio Grande do Sul Coastal Plain. These data provided the identification of five palynofacies, with paleoenvironmental significance. Palynofacies A, with equivalent particulate organic matter among the four groups is associated to processes of gradational suspension; Palynofacies B and C represent fluvial influx control, with percentual differences between the groups; Palynofacies D, predominantly comprised of AOM and opaque phytoclasts is correlated to suspension and traction processes; suspension processes are attributed to Palynofacies E, with AOM and palynomorphs predominance. The results have shown the potential of palynofacies analysis through the interpretation and reconstitution of environments.
Palavras-Chave: Paleotoca, megafauna extinta, Serra do Gandarela, Geoparque Quadrilátero Ferrífero. ABSTRACTThe paleoburrow in the Gandarela Mountains, Quadrilátero Ferrífero (MG) is an important record of the extinct megafauna of mammals. This is similar to previous occurrences in iron formations in northern Minas Gerais and in several rocks in other regions of Brazil, but stands out for the dimensions of length 340m, making it the largest paleoburrow found so far. This work has been carried out under the sponsorship of the Minas Gerais Public Prosecutor's Office. The scientific and educational significance of this fossil occurrence is assessed, aiming at its inclusion as a geosite of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero Geopark. This preliminary analysis suggests that this paleoburrow is a valuable example of paleontological heritage, what fully legitimates its proposition as a paleontological/geological site of Quadrilátero Ferrífero Geopark. Keywords: Paleoburrow, extinct megafauna, Gandarela Mountains, Quadrilátero Ferrífero Geopark.
