PREDICTION EQUATIONS OF DIGESTIBLE ENERGY FOR PROTEIN INGRE- DIENTS OF VEGETABLE ORIGIN USED IN DIETS FOR TILAPIAABSTRACT: This study aimed to develop prediction equations of the content of digestible energy (DE) of protein foods of vegetable origin used in diets for tilapia. Initially we carried out a systematic review of national literature. The descriptive analysis was performed. To determine the association between the chemical components and the energy values was calculated the Pearson correlation coefficients. The prediction equation was obtained using the stepwise method considering a significance level of 5%. The fit of the equations was performed with the SAS 9.0 software. The equation was evaluated by comparing the values estimates with those presented in Brazilian Tables for Tilapia Nutrition (2010), using the t test for paired samples. By analyzing the correlation between energy values and the chemical components, it was observed that the DE showed more significant correlation with CP (r = 0.678). By stepwise technique, only the content of crude protein (CP ) was selected to make the equation: DE ( kcal / kg ) = 536.26 + 57.78 CP ( % ) ( R2 = 0.64 , P < 0.0002 ). By t test, no difference (P = 0.1533) between the observed values and the predicted values by equation was observed. Based on the results, to predict the digestible energy content of protein ingredients of vegetable origin for tilapia the equation is recommended: DE = 536.26 +57.78 CP , where DE is the digestible energy ( kcal / kg NM ), CP is the crude protein content ( % in NM).Keywords: Feed formulation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of ambient temperature and consumption on the performance, carcass yields and cuts, organs, and body temperatures of meat quails. The experiment was conducted at the Federal University of Maranhão, campus of Chapadinha-MA, during September to October 2013. From the 14th day of age, 450 meat quails, not sexed, with an average initial weight of 90.4 ± 12.9 g, were distributed in batteries and accommodated in either acclimatized or non-acclimatized rooms, until 42 days of age. The experimental design was completely randomized, with three treatments, and six replicates of 25 birds each. The treatments were CE (acclimatized environment at 26 °C); NE (natural environment), and CECC (acclimatized environment at 26 °C with controlled feed, to keep the same consumption level as that of the birds in NE). The evaluated variables at 28 and 42 days of age were as follows: (1) the intake of feed, weight gain, feed conversion, body weight, and energy efficiency to weight gain, (2) the carcass weight, carcass yields (%) for breast, thigh, drumstick, and wing, and (3) the relative weights (%) of the digestive tract, heart, liver, gizzard, and intestine. In addition, we evaluated the cloacal and surface temperatures (°C), and subsequently, calculated the average and surface body temperatures. The treatment means were compared using the Student-Newman-Keuls test, with 5% level of significance. Compared with the acclimatized ambient environment, the natural environment more favored the performance of quails up to 28 days, but then affected it negatively from that age onward. Carcass yield, organs, and internal temperature of the quails maintained in the acclimatized and natural environments were not influenced. SUMMARYThe objective of the study was to determine optimal lysine levels (Lys) in diets for finishing pigs, suitable for optimize performance and reduce feed costs, using the meta-analysis technique. Feed conversion (FC) data from 16 dose-response experiments realized in Brazil (from 2000 to 2011), which evaluated increasing lysine levels in diets were used. The feed conversion data from selected works were converted to a common basis and submitted to regression analyzes considering the lysine level as independent variable by the exponential, quadratic model and Linear Response Plateau (LRP). Based on exponential equation was calculated the variation of feed cost per kg of weight gain. The cost of basal diet (without Llysine) was considered as R$0.70/kg, and assigned the value of 2.80 (g/g) for the FC desired. The optimal total lysine level appropriate to optimize performance, recommended by quadratic model was 1.036 %, while the optimum level recommen-
