We evaluated the effects of constant low-temperature storage on Diaeretiella rapae (McIntosh) (Braconidae, Aphidiinae). Diaeretiella rapae mummies were stored at 5 ± 1°C for 0-36 days. The percentage of D. rapae emergence varied (100-83%) after 0-32 days of storage. After 32 days, emergence reduced to 55%. According to our Probit analysis, 50% mortality (LT50) of the population of D. rapae was reached after 40 days of storage at 5°C. Storage for up to 32 days did not negatively affect emergence and survival. Cold exposure of D. rapae for 36 days did not influence morphological malformations, sex ratio, and emergence of the F1 generation. After 4-36 days of storage, D. rapae showed a gradual decrease in emergence, longevity, reproductive capacity, and F1 sex ratio. Diaeretiella rapae can be stored for up to 24 days at 5°C, at which time the percentage of parasitism and the F1 sex ratio remain above 38% and at 0.50, respectively.
-The dynamics of a population of the cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae (L.), was studied to estimate the impact of natural enemies and meteorological factors using simple correlation and stepwise regression. Apterous B. brassicae were sampled by visual search, and natural enemies by suction net and pitfall traps. The aphids began to infest kale in July, reaching peak population in September. The factors Diaeretiella rapae (Mc'Intosh), ground spiders, rainfall and relative humidity showed significant correlation with B. brassicae population, in the period that embraced the whole population survey, which suggests that these factors had an important function in the mortality of the aphid. During the period of highest increase and decline of the population of B. brassicae, ground spiders constituted the most significant mortality factor related with the variation of the population density of the aphid.KEY WORDS: Insecta, population dynamics, predator, parasitoid, Brassica oleracea.RESUMO -Neste estudo, visou-se avaliar o impacto de inimigos naturais e de fatores meteorológicos na população do pulgão Brevicoryne brassicae (L.), na cultura da couve, usando-se correlação simples e análise de regressão múltipla com seleção de variáveis pelo método stepwise. The lady beetle Coleomegilla maculata (De Geer) is a natural enemy of several insect pests and feeds on pollen and nectar to survive periods when prey is scarce. The effect of the feeding interval on the development, survival, fecundity, and longevity of C. maculata was determined. Newly hatched larvae of C. maculata were reared individually and fed with eggs of the Mediterranean lour moth Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) at intervals of one, two, and three days under controlled conditions (23 ± 1 o C; 60 ± 10% RH; 12 h phtophase). The duration of larval instars and the total larval stage was prolonged as the feeding interval increased. The larval period lasted on average 9.2 0.19 days when the larvae were fed daily with prey, and 14.6 0.48 days when food was offered at three-day intervals. There was an inverse relationship between food intervals, survival, and weight of larvae and adults of the coccinellid. Survival rate of larvae fed daily was 76.8%, while the rate was 50.0% and 23.4% for larvae fed every two and three days, respectively. Coleomegilla maculata showed fecundity of 781.1 ± 149.02, 563.4 ± 80.81 and 109.0 ± 103.0 eggs when fed daily and at intervals of two and three days, respectively.
-This study aimed to determine the thermal requirements of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer), to calculate age-specific life tables, and to predict the occurrence of adults in the field by a degree-day model. The aphids were reared, individualized, in leaf cages set on kale, Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala DC., kept at 15, 20, 23, 25 and 30°C, in laboratory. The lowest developmental thermal threshold (Tb) was 2.2°C and the thermal constant (K) was 165.6 day-degree. The degree-day model predicted the occurrence of adults 0-1 day before the time they were first observed in the field. The age-specific life table parameters, on a degree-day time scale, indicated that the temperatures 23°C and 25°C provided the best thermal conditions for the population growth of M. persicae. At these temperatures the highest intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m = 0.012) was observed as well as the lowest mean generation time (T = 303.8 degree-day and T = 272 degree-day, respectively) and population doubling time (TD = 57.8 degree-day).KEY WORDS: Green peach aphid, temperature, degree-day, population dynamics, Brassica oleracea RESUMO -Este estudo visou determinar as exigências térmicas do pulgão Myzus persicae (Sulzer), calcular tabelas de vida de fertilidade, e prever a ocorrência de adultos no campo, por meio de modelo de graus-dia.
The present study had as objective determine the diversity and abundance of adults Carabidae and Staphylinidae in two areas, constituted by forest fragment and soybean/corn crops under conventional tillage and no-tillage systems and to analyze the distribution and preference of those beetles for the habitat. The beetles were sampled with 48 pitfall traps. In both experimental areas, two parallel transects of pitfall traps were installed. Each transect had 100 m in the crop and 100 m in the forest fragment. Four traps were close to each other (1 m) in the edge between the crop and the forest fragment, the other traps were installed each 10 m. The obtained data were submitted to the faunistic analysis and the preference of the species by habitat was obtained by cluster analysis. The results demonstrated that the type of crop system (conventional tillage or no-tillage) might have influenced the diversity of species of Carabidae and Staphylinidae. The cluster analysis evidenced that the carabids may prefer a specific habitat. In the present study, the distribution of carabids and staphylinids in the three habitats showed that these beetles have potential to be dispersed at great distances inside the crop.Key words: ground beetles, rove beetles, no-tillage systems, forest fragment, edge.
