The study explored the implications of environmental sanitation for three coastal livelihood activities, namely fishing, tourism and salt production. Qualitative data were collected from purposively selected respondents through key informant interviews and focus group discussions, and analysed using thematic and most significant stories approaches. The study found that sanitation affected livelihoods associated with tourism, fishing and salt production through its implications for health, productivity, income, job security and sustainability of the physical environment. However, while virtually all respondents acknowledged the effect of sanitation on human capital through the health implications, a substantial part of the people who eked their living from the stated livelihood activities did not appreciate the link between sanitation and these livelihood avenues. Sanitation behavioural change communication messaging by the responsible actors should, therefore, stress the relevance of sanitation not only for human health but also the linkage between sanitation and sustainable livelihood in its entirety. The literature generally indicates that succession in family businesses takes the form of transfer from one generation to another, but succession planning appears to be left to chance by many firms. This neglect of succession planning and the emotions generated by the process make owners ill-prepared for succession. The objective of this study was to explore the factors that influence succession planning in family-owned businesses and their importance in ensuring the continuity and prosperity of businesses in the Wa Municipality, Ghana. A random sample of 205 out of 440 family businesses was systematically drawn, and an interview schedule was used to collect data which were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings indicate that higher level of education of founders and communication of the succession decision, comprising the transfer date, and post-succession roles to all key stakeholders affect the succession process and the success of the transfer. When the founder's level of education is relatively high, there is the likelihood of succession planning in the business, but trust seems to be limited with respect to female owners. It is therefore recommended that family-owned businesses in the municipality should be encouraged by supervisory or oversight agencies like the registrar general or National Board for Small Scale Industries to improve their educational level, build trust, and set dates for transfer of responsibilities, specify post-succession roles of incumbents and communicate the succession decision to all key stakeholders in order to improve the succession process and ensure the continuity of the businesses.
Purpose-The purpose of the study was to examine the relevance of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) in information management research, and how it has been extended in relation to its perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. Methodology-A desk study approach was used to review some of the studies that have used the model. Search engines, such as google scholar, yahoo search, and answers. com, were used to search through internationally renowned journals like Emerald, Science direct, IJRIC, South African Journal of Information Management and others. In all, twenty two ( 22) articles that were published from 1999 to 2016 were used. The 22 articles were those which have used the TAM in empirical studies and have well-described methodologies and clear findings. Findings-The review showed that TAM is still recognized as the right model for quantitative based information management research, and to a lesser extent qualitative information management research and desk studies. However, while some researchers concluded that the TAM is relevant in determining and assessing users' behaviour regarding technology usage with respect to time, others have criticised the TAM as too limited in the areas of theoretical assumptions and practical effectiveness. These critics have concluded that the model lacks the necessary attributes as a good theory for information system research. Conclusion-In essence, the conflicting views create inconclusiveness about usage of TAM as a theoretical model. Such inconclusiveness calls for further research, and such research should set clear boundaries with respect to measurement of the issues, sampling procedures, and the analytical procedures.
A knowledge-based economy thrives on constructed advantages generated through well-planned recursive interactions among key actors in the economy. Using a desk review, this paper advances theoretical and conceptual arguments in support of research collaboration as a critical and viable medium for the conduct of research and innovation geared towards economic growth and development. We propose a conceptual framework to guide future research on the determinants and the dynamics of research collaboration as well as the use of collaborative research output in innovation. The framework, which can be modelled, is recommended for descriptive and explanatory research aimed at obtaining first-hand information for policy interventions that seek to advance the knowledge-based economy, through research collaboration.
