SUMMARYA total of 320 horses were studied in this paper, both male and female, between two and 17 years of age, which were used for traction of wagons in the urban area of the municipality of Londrina (PR). These animals were kept, after their daily work, in abandoned areas or plots, in the outskirts of the urban area of the city. When these animals were attended by the veterinarians, between 1996 and 2005, none of them presented symptoms suggesting leptospirosis. The most frequent reasons for the visit were loss of weight, unwillingness for work, parasitism, laminess, and wounds. Microscopic Seroagglutination Test (SAM), with 22 Leptospira serovars, was performed in sera sample from all these animals. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of antibodies against Leptospira spp. in horses from the urban area of Londrina (PR). From the samples tested, 214 (66.88%) were considered positive, with titers between 100 and 3200, being that 49 (22.90%) presented antibodies against a single serovar of Leptospira, and 165 (77.10%) samples presented antibodies against two or more serovars simultaneously, where in 88 (53.33%) it was possible to characterize the most likely probable serovar. Antibodies against the serovar Icterohaemorrhagiae were detected in 32 (23.36%) animals.

ResumoA leptospirose é uma zoonose reemergente associada ao convívio próximo entre o cão e o homem. É importante determinar se os fatores de risco da leptospirose canina são semelhantes aos do homem, ou são variáveis exclusivas ao hábito e manejo da espécie. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram identificar variáveis individuais e ambientais, associadas a maior freqüência de cães soropositivos para leptospira, atendidos no Hospital Veterinário da Universidade Estadual de Londrina. Foram estudados 160 cães de ambos os sexos e não vacinados contra leptospirose, entre março de 1997 e abril de 1998. Todos os animais foram submetidos à prova de aglutinação microscópica e ao exame direto da urina. Para cada um deles foi utilizado um questionário epidemiológico que procurou investigar variáveis que poderiam estar associadas a essa infecção. Os resultados obtidos foram submetidos ao teste χ 2 . Foram detectados títulos de anticorpos ≥100 em 40 cães, sendo em maior freqüência contra o sorovar pyrogenes (45,00%) e 24 animais foram positivos no exame direto da urina. A análise das variáveis apontou como fator de risco para a leptospirose canina,o hábito de caçar roedor (OR=4,22; 1,89≤IC95%≤9,50), a presença de áreas alagadiças próximas às residências (OR=2,86; 1,32≤IC95%≤6,22) e o acesso à rua (OR=2,57; 1,19≤IC95%≤5,59). Os resultados servem como alerta em relação a possibilidade de exposição humana a alguns fatores de risco para a leptospirose a que estão expostos estes cães. It is important to determine whether the canine leptospirosis risk factors are similar to those of man or are variables exclusive to the species habitat and management. The objective of this study was to identify the individual and environmental variables most frequently associated with seropositive dogs attended in the Veterinary Hospital at Londrina State University. One hundred and sixty dogs of both sexes not vaccinated against leptospirosis were studied over a 13-month period (march 1997 to april 1998). All the animals were submitted to the microscopic aglutination test and to the direct urine test. The objective of this trial was to detect leptospires in fragments of kidney, liver and uterus of 96 cows with unknown sanitary status, randomly chosen at slaughter in Paraná, Brazil. All 96 urine samples were submitted to direct examination using dark field microscopy. Positive samples in the direct examination and all kidney, liver and uterus fragments were cultured in EMJH modified medium and Tween 80/40/LH. Sections cut of kidney, liver and uterus were stained by Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE) and indirect immunoperoxidase with hyperimmune serum against serovar Hardjo (Hardjoprajitno) and strain Londrina 14 (LO14), from serovar Canicola, which was isolated in the northern region of Paraná state, Brazil, used as primary antibodies. Direct examination detected leptospires in the urine of four animals. All attempts to isolate leptospires from urine and kidney, liver and uterus fragments were negative after 16 weeks of incubation. In the HE stain, focal infiltrate of mononuclear inflammatory cells was observed in the renal interstitial area of most animals. In the indirect immunoperoxidase assay using hyperimmune serum against LO14 strain, the kidney of only one animal presented positive results. All fragments of kidney, liver and uterus tested with hyperimmune serum against serovar Hardjo were negative.
A Chlamydophila abortus (anteriormente classificada como Chlamydia psittaci sorotipo 1) tem sido descrita em muitos países, associada principalmente com distúrbios reprodutivos em ovinos, bovinos e caprinos. O aborto enzoótico dos ovinos e caprinos e o aborto epizoótico dos bovinos são as doenças mais importantes causadas por esta bactéria. No Brasil, as pesquisas com C. abortus são praticamente inexistentes. O objetivo desta revisão é apresentar informações sobre modificações taxonômicas, ciclo de vida, epidemiologia, patogenia, sinais clínicos e diagnóstico da infecção por C. abortus principalmente em ovinos, bovinos e caprinos.
