Le notevoli difficoltà connesse a una delimitazione della nozione di 'luogo' e più in generale di estensione 'spaziale' nel Timeo platonico, come pure alla comprensione stessa dei termini greci che la designanotov poò, cþra, e{ dra -, attengono innanzitutto a un problema concettuale, perché, a differenza degli atomisti, platone, come buona parte dei pensatori suoi predecessori, contemporanei e successori immediati, non ammette l'esistenza del vuoto, ossia di uno 'spazio' che, privo di grandezza materiale, possa sussistere di per sé come puro 'contenitore' suscettibile di accogliere dei corpi in un'estensione delimitata da confini che, appunto in quanto 'vuota', si lasci distinguere, anche solo logikwò, dai corpi che contiene. 2 in altre pa-1 come è noto, e come preciserò in quanto segue, non appartengono alla riflessione fisicocosmologica di platone né la nozione di 'materia' nel senso tecnico che essa assumerà a partire dalla Fisica di aristotele né, di conseguenza, il termine oelh da allora utilizzato per designarla, che si trova nel Timeo, in un'unica occorrenza (69a6), con il suo significato usuale nella lingua greca, a indicare il 'legname' e, per estensione, un materiale da costruzione; verosimilmente già a partire da cicerone, questo termine è reso in latino con l'equivalente silva, cui si affianca, nello stesso contesto teorico, come attestano per esempio apuleio e calcidio, il termine materia (cfr. su tutto ciò infra, § 4). nel Timeo e altrove, platone si esprime piuttosto, in relazione alla 'materia', chiamando in causa la nozione di 'corporeità', o di assenza di 'corporeità', e dunque servendosi del termine swma e dei suoi derivati, il cui tratto fondamentale consiste nel suo carattere sensibile (aij sqhtün), ossia in primis visibile e tangibile (oJ ratov n e aJ ptov n): cfr. 28b e passim. parlando di grandezza 'materiale', di sostrato 'materiale' o di 'materia' tout court, mi riferisco perciò qui esclusivamente a questa peculiare nozione di 'corporeità' che, per platone, rappresenta l'elemento costitutivo e distintivo degli enti sensibili.2 La negazione del 'vuoto', nel Timeo platonico, si trova ampiamente e ripetutamente attestata. innanzitutto, in 32c-33d, in base all'argomento implicito secondo il quale il corpo del mondo è stato costituito dal demiurgo con tutta la materia esistente e senza residui, cioè esaurendo la totalità di ciascuno degli elementi disponibili (ej k pur'ò pant'ò u{ dat'ò te kaiV aj ev roò kaiV ghò), sicché niente altro esiste oltre esso e al di fuori di esso (ouj deV n uJ peleiv peto e[ xwqen) né a esso alcunché può aggiungersi o sottrarsi (aj phv / ei te gaV r ouj deV n ouj deV proshv ẽin auj tw~ poqen, ouj deV gaV r ƒn): l'unità compatta e l'unicità assoluta del corpo del mondo non lasciano margini per l'ammissione del vuoto, né al suo interno né al suo esterno. di seguito, e questa volta in forma esplicita, in 58a-b si precisa che
