Ce numéro de la revue L'éducation en débats : analyse comparée explore la question de la justice sociale en éducation en interrogeant notamment les différents usages et acceptions du concept. En proposant d'investiguer son développement, de manière théorique et empirique en éducation, c'est une certaine conception de la justice sociale qui est entendue : un concept utile pour penser l'école, analyser les injustices qu'elle produit et la manière dont les acteurs/trices s'en saisissent.Récemment, la question de la justice sociale semble prendre une place plus visible dans les débats sociaux, notamment en résonance aux différents mouvements citoyens dénonçant le racisme et le sexisme. Initialement porté par des voix anglo-saxonnes, qui le discutent depuis plusieurs décennies, le concept est aujourd'hui bien présent dans les discours francophones où sa résonance avec les notions d'égalité, d'inégalités et de discriminations, nourrit le débat scientifique et social. En particulier, les discussions à propos de l'évolution du concept permettent une réflexion sur le monde, sur les interactions interindividuelles, intergroupes, sur les interdépendances, qui structurent notre environnement (social, politique et économique), mais aussi sur nos conceptions de l'éducation, de ses finalités et de son fonctionnement. La question éducative cristallise en effet les enjeux de justice soulevés par la scolarisation et la distribution des élèves dans l'institution éducative (Dubet, 2018), et ce d'autant plus au moment où les systèmes développent des politiques d'éducation dite inclusives (Ebersold, 2021 ; Prud'homme, et al., 2016). Développé à partir des travaux de Rawls (1972), et de la théorie sociale critique de Fraser notamment (2005 ; 2009), le concept de justice sociale peut être compris comme un processus, mais également comme un objectif (Bell, 2007). Cela signifie que la justice est à la fois un paradigme au sein duquel ancrer son action, mais aussi le but vers lequel cette action doit justement tendre.
