Le passage du temps n'amenuisa pas l'intérêt de l'auteur pour cette question ; en revanche, sa façon de considérer cette relation évolua considérablement, évolution que met particulièrement en avant le détour par la peinture auquel la représentation du paysage donne lieu dans ces deux oeuvres. Si l'on utilise le mot « détour » pour parler de la manière dont l'image fait saillie dans le texte, c'est avant tout parce que cette intrusion du pictural s'affiche comme un itinéraire qui s'écarte du chemin direct, en l'occurrence comme un écart par rapport au code sémiotique de l'écrit. C'est cette idée qui sous-tendra le premier temps de ma réflexion. Mais n'est-il pas logique que le terme « détour » ait plus d'un sens, plus d'un tour dans son sac ? Ainsi, l'idée de méandres et de lacets qu'implique aussi ce mot me servira-t-elle de guide dans le second temps de ce parcours de la représentation du paysage chez Powys.
