This chapter explicates child protection and welfare in France. The overall structure of France’s child protection system relies on collaboration between the justice system and social services, the latter implementing virtually all care orders through the département-based Aide sociale à l’enfance. The main sources of funding for social action are fiscal after it devolved to départements as a consequence of the decentralization of state competencies. The chapter also notes the types of danger, local disparities, and principles of intervention. It looks into how the French child protection and welfare system is based on national solidarity and profoundly territorialized since most issues are connected to a lack of data and consistency over the territory.
