A obra “Castanha do Pará”, de Gidalti Jr., foi envolvida em uma polêmica em abril de 2018. Incluída em uma exposição de histórias em quadrinhos, ela teve um dos desenhos lido como uma crítica à atuação agressiva da polícia militar. Houve comentários negativos nas redes sociais, o que levou a organização a retirar a arte e substituir por outra. O gesto foi interpretado como um ato de censura, noticiado pela imprensa e ecoado uma vez mais nos ambientes digitais. Este artigo tem como proposta analisar o caso e entender como foram construídas as diferentes leituras sobre a cena exposta. Para isso, serão acionados os conceitos de contexto e de referenciação, vinculados à área da Linguística Textual. Defende-se a premissa de que o arcabouço teórico relacionado ao texto ajuda a demonstrar que produções compostas apenas por imagens, sem o apoio dos elementos verbais escritos, podem gerar leituras distintas sobre o mesmo conteúdo apresentado. Uma das estratégias centrais para isso é o processo de recategorização, que levou a interpretações diferentes e antagônicas dos referentes expostos no desenho da obra.
