Our society has started to recognize that the environment is one of our largest resources and has begun legally enforce its protection. In Brazil, the environmental law is constitutionally guaranteed. International treaties have been signed, amongst them the Agenda 21 which is a commitment to sustainable development. Green Chemistry is a strategy that helps make this commitment. The literature presents many examples of studies of the application of Green Chemistry philosophy. In this paper we will present some points that we believe to be important and promising. Keywords: Green Chemistry; sustainable development; Agenda 21.

A review on the electrophilic addition of iodine to alkenes in the presence of oxygen containing nucleophiles (cohalogenation reaction) is presented. The intermolecular reactions are discussed with emphasis in methods of reaction and synthetic applications of the resulting vicinal iodofunctionalized products (iodohydrins, β-iodoethers and β-iodocarboxylates).
Recebido em 21/7/00; aceito em 13/12/00 ORGANIC REACTIONS IN AQUEOUS MEDIA. The use of water as solvent in organic reactions has been uncommon for several reasons, among them the low solubility of the reactants, the incompatibility of the intermediates with water, and the competition between the desired reaction and hydrolysis. Breslow in 1980, demonstrated that the hydrophobic effect accelerates Diels-Alder reactions and gives a high endo/exo selectivity. Since then, many other reactions were studied in this medium, and below we show the principal results. Besides the academic interest, human and economic aspects are included in this study. Water as a solvent minimizes environmental impact, costs and increases operational safety. Keywords: water; organic reactions; hydrophobic effect. Quim. Nova, Vol. 24, No. 5, 646-657, 2001.
The Michael additions of dicarbonyl compounds, nitroalkanes, and thiols to 2-cyclohexen-1-one can be accomplished in water without phase transfer agents. The reaction is extremely sensitive to the pH of the reaction media, and therefore, the methodology can be optimized with the control of this variable. The best pH depends on the used nucleophile.Key words: Michael addition, aqueous media, water, 2-cyclohexen-1-one, ketone.
Background: We found an excellent review in the literature of the Biginelli reaction that addresses the methodologies for obtaining enantiopure dihydropyrimidinones (DHPMs). In 1992, optically pure DHPMs were obtained by fractional crystallization of the diastereomeric ammonium salt derivative with (S)-(-) and (R)-(+)--methylbenzylamine and by other chiral resolution techniques, such chiral high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Asymmetric syntheses of these compounds are also found in the literature. The main strategy uses acid catalysts such as organophosphates, organometallic complexes, amines and diamines, nanocomposites, and chiral ionic liquids, e.g., L-prolinium sulfate (Pro2SO4). Objective: To study the Biginelli reaction with a chiral aldehyde. Methods: A mixture of ethyl acetoacetate (0.26 g, 3 mmol), urea (0.18 g, 3 mmol) and ethyl lactate (EL) (1 mL) is left under heating at 70 °C and stirring for 1 h. Next, (-)-(1R)-myrtenal (0.45 g, 3 mmol) is added, and the medium is heated for 5 h more until a white solid forms. Ten millilitres of distilled water is added, and the product is extracted with CH2Cl2 (3 x 4 mL). The solvent is evaporated, and the product is recrystallized from ethanol-water. Results: (+)-Myrtenal was used as a chiral substrate for a study that led to ethyl (R)-4-((1R,5S)-6,6-dimethylbicyclo [3.1.1]hept-2-en-2-yl)-6-methyl-2-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidine-5-carboxylate by the Biginelli synthesis using EL as a green solvent. The result is the first example of the enantiospecific Biginelli reaction. The product was exhaustively characterized by several physical analysis methods, i.e., 1H, 13C and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, mass spectrometry (MS), and high-resolution MS (HRMS), and its structure was unequivocally elucidated by X-ray crystallography. Conclusion: Compound (4R)-4-(6,6-dimethylbicyclo[3.1.1]hept-2-en-2-yl)-6-methyl-2-oxo-1,2,3,4- tetrahydropyrimidine-5-ethyl carboxylate is the first example of the enantiospecific Biginelli reaction. In addition, the process has the advantage of using EL as a green solvent. The product was characterized by 1H, 13C, and 2D NMR and IR spectroscopy, MS, HRMS, and X-ray crystallography.
A review on the intramolecular coiodination of alkenes with internal oxygenated nucleophiles (alkenols, unsaturated ethers, carboxylic acids and derivatives) is presented. The reactions are discussed with emphasis in the preparation of iodotetrahydrofurans, iodotetrahydropyrans and iodolactones and their utilization in organic synthesis. The intramolecular coiodination of alkenes with less common oxygenated nucleophiles (unsaturated carbonates, phosphates, isoxazolines, uretanes, hydroperoxides and silenols) is also presented. da Silva et al.Recently, we reported the intermolecular coiodination of alkenes with oxygenated nucleophiles [17], and the products (iodohydrins, β-iodoethers and β-iodoesters) proved to be
